high school budget question

i'm doing my best to plan ahead for expenses...

i'm re-working my budget/savings spreadsheet on excel... and a question hit me.

in general terms (because every school is different) what should i expect to pay for/buy for my son during his high school years... and how much should i expect to pay?

i know that there is prom, senior pictures, class ring, yearbook. does anyone know what these things go for, these days?

i grew up out west, so i don't know if there are different "customs" for highschool out there, this is why i'm asking.

Re: high school budget question

Does he play sports? Some schools have booster clubs and you are made to feel like you have to purchase what ever they are selling or he might want a letterman jacket.
Will he need tutoring?
What does he do during the summer?
Will he work?
Will you pay for clothing, accessories, a car?

My parents did not pay for my prom tickets, limo, after activities, accessories, shoes, or boutiner for my then boy friend. I did. They only paid for my dress.

Re: high school budget question

I'm not a BTDTM, but when I was in HS (graduated in 1998)

yearbook-$100
class ring-$250
prom tickets & weekend plans-I paid for myself through my part-time job
prom dress & hair-my mom paid for which was about $150
car-my parents & I split 50/50. So it was about $1550

my parents did pay for majority of things. I personally think these "extras" are hard to budget for. Once I started working I began paying for these things.

Will he work at all? I had to work and pay for all prom related things, except my dress.
Class rings were like 400-1000 this year, according to my aunt who just got one for my cousin.
Sports equipment if he needs it
Car insurance, car
There's a lot of unpredictables.
