Highlights for dark hair
Hello Ladies: I am 14 weeks along and the grays are driving me mad. My OB is suggesting I wait to color my hair . I am contemplating highlights. My hair is very dark brown. Has anyone highlighted gray on dark hair? How does it look? I am so used to a double process. I could just wait until 3 rd trimester and maybe he will ok a ammonia free dye? I am confused. Any advice? Susanne

Re: Highlights for dark hair
i have been highlighting my hair for years i have medium brown hair and get blonde highlights half of head. highlights do not touch your root so you can get them at any time.

Re: Highlights for dark hair
Don't do it unless you're willing to continue paying for highlights for a very long time. It took me about 2 years to finally get my hair back to one single color. I used a semi-permanent dye to color my hair. It doesn't have any of the harsh chemicals and covered my gray just fine.

Re: Highlights for dark hair
I had my hair dyed and highlighted late August, just 2 weeks before I found out I was PG. Fast forward 9 months, my roots are about 7 inches long, the highlights look like they were started in the middle of my head and the mix of brown, grey and caramel is NOT pretty!
I am waiting to have her to get it dyed...I didn't want to chance having the dye seep into my skin and also did not want to sit in the salon for 2+ hours breathing in all those horrible fumes!

Re: Highlights for dark hair
last time I had my highlights done was just before I found out that I was pregnant- I told my hair dresser and she used a non-toxic formula
my ob said it was safe for me to go again at 15 weeks- so I will go then and ask for the same non-toxic formula
I have heard that highlights are safer than coloring because they dont touch your scalp and soak in the way full color does- but I would still ask your ob

Re: Highlights for dark hair
OK I think the final verdict will be to wait until I get the ok from the ob then I plan on using farouk haircolor, its 100% certified organic, with no ammonia peroxide and formaldehyde, the active ingredient in it is called alpha hydroxy fruit acid. Hope doctor agrees that this is ok, if not i will just deal. An Oscar blondi pen was also recommended to me.
