Hip dysplasia
My BIL & SIL have a border collie who is under a year old, probably around 10 months old. He was limping and they brought him to the vet and was told he has hip dysplasia and will need a double hip replacement. They were also told it will cost in the thousands of dollars, as high as $5K. They are in a quandry bc they love the dog but it is more than they can afford if it ends up being that much. They were referred to a animal hospital in Plainview (I don't know the name)
Does anyone know of vet or anywhere that they could go for a second opinion on the surgery and cost? I am hoping there is somewhere less expensive so they can hopefully keep him. They are heartbroken. My SIL heard of a veterinary school in Ohio and is actually considering driving there if they will treat him but she doesn't even know if it is.
TIA

Re: Hip dysplasia
If they bought the dog from a breeder, I would call the breeder and tell them. I'm probably wrong but, I thought breeders are supposed to test for this prior to breeding and/or selling?
Poor dog!! I would hate to have to see your inlaws have to get rid of him.
I would recommend my VET but, I'm OOS. When I did live in NY I used Central in Valley Stream but, they are very expensive.

Re: Hip dysplasia
My pug had hip dysplasia surgery when she was about 10 months old. It cost us a total of $2300.00 and now you would never know she had surgery, she is back to normal activities.
We used Crawford Animal Hospital in Lynbrook. They are great! Never had a problem with them and been using them for years.
Good Luck!

I'm very sorry to hear this, and I wish I had good information for you. I wish you luck in finding affordable treatment. I will ask my friends if they know of anyplace.

I looked into that too when we got Brinkley, since Labs are prone to HD. I was told by the breeder and vet that until a dog is finished growing, there's no point in checking for HD really because things change so much. Unless there is an obvious problem of course. If they got their dog less than 2 years old from the breeder, they probably wouldn't have known.
However, the breeder should absolutely be told because the right thing to do would be to remove the parents from the breeding program if they are know to have puppies with these issues. Even if the parents have OFA certs and their hips are perfect, they can still have one puppy with HD, or more. A responsible breeder will want to know.
