Hoarders is giving me anxiety lol
I am watching this show, I watch it all the time and I don't know why because all I do is scream at the tv. This is insane. She is nitpicking over broken stuff, refusing to get rid of it. Meanwhile, the state won't let her back in her home because she has health problems and passed out and they had to break windows to save her and after she got better they told her that it was too risky for her to live there until she cleaned up, that was over a year ago. She still refuses to get rid of even basic garbage. I just can't comprehend.

AHHHHH OMG she just opened her fridge, it hasn't been opened in over a year. They cleared a path to get to it, she opened it and BUGGGS all over everything! AHHH It was sooooo gross. I am going to get sick! How do people live like this!? It's not just clutter, it's rotting food and maggots and rodents. How do they see this as okay?

when i had cable, i would watch every now and then. now, i have netflix, and i watched all of seasons 1 and 2.
usually, when i watch, i cry. my heart aches for how mentally screwed up these people must be to be willing to hold on to these things and to be separated from people they love.
but you're right, some of the people are much more gross than others. there have been some episodes that i turn away because it's so gross

Ditto! DH and I will actually pause the show to go clean, we just can't take it! It ends up taking us like 3 hours to watch one episode because we compulsively clean

I put it on when my 8 year old in the room. The one who saved menus from a restaurant she drew in & boxes with designs on them from toys.
Yeah, I'm not going over her house when she's older.

I would like to know what happens with these people after the show ends.
Do they get on- going counseling? Do they see a Psychiatrist for medication? This is not just a sloppy person's problem. These people have a mental illness.
I hope they do get care, because if they don't it seems like they are just being exploited for other people's entertainment.
Don't get me wrong, I watch it, it just makes me so sad, especially for the children involved.

That show makes me clean. No joke I can never watch more than 10 minutes bc I end up getting up and scrubbing something. I guess its good motivation. Luckily im the complete opposite of a hoarder, I throw everything away

Well, they generally give small updates at the end of the episode about whether or not the person is accepting after-care. They do offer it to all of the people on the show, but not everyone accepts it. Just like the help with the hoarding - not all of the people even accept that.
It is a serious illness, and I feel for the people on the show. I had no idea how many people suffered from it, so I think it's great that they're making the problem known, and hopefully helping some people as a result.

me too! I get the urge to throw out all my crap! It actually motivates me to get off my lazy butt & clean up! When DH complains that I have too much stuff, I tell him, yeah you have nothing to complain about & I tell him to watch that show.

The show proves that most people don't change... no matter how grave their situation is (foreclosure, threat of kids being taken away, becoming homeless, not being able to be with a certain family member, illness, etc.)!! They are given the options to have therapists and personal organizers and most decline or accept and then stop or accept and still live inside the house as they were before. On season two they revisited houses and only one or two were better than before. Others were the same if not worse. I can't believe the first or second episode ever, where the woman was eating expired yogurts from 6 months-1 year old... she thought there was nothing wrong with it! She didn't change even with therapy.
