Holding back one more year before kindergarten?

Are you able to hold back your child one more year? My son has one more year of 4 year special education preschool with SEIT, OT and speech. Will a SD let my child repeat that year with services? What are my options? My son is PDDNOS and I believe another year would help him more so emotionally and maturity wise. He is early August birthday but since he has a diagnosis I just think this would be better for him but would it even matter to hold back if he most likely will enter a special ed kindergarten class? Will the SD tell me no you can't hold back? Would appreciate some insight on this. Its not that hes not show progress thus far I just want to to do more for him and I feel another repeat year would help.

one more question...is SEIT included in special ed kindergarten?

If you hold him back you won't get any services except for related services. We are putting DS in a special class for Kindergarten. ??

you will only receive speech and OT.

DS turned 5, 19 days before school started, he has classic autism. they put him in a self contained class in district.

if your district doesnt feel a mainstream school is appropriate then they will send him to a special ed school that has K classes.

ETA: if you opt of not sending him to K, and only opt for Speech and OT, when you do decide to send him to school, he will automatically be entered into 1st grade. he will not be able to do K, since you opted to skip it.

I had no idea about that, I wouldn't want that. He is doing well, is currently in a6:1:2 very restrictive and they said its too restrictive for him that he should be in self contained 12:1:2. His cognitive score is 89/112 he is definetly making progress and we have high hopes that he'll cotinue. I figured keeping him back one year might help all around including socially. Why couldn't I register for kindergarten? Is it because the go buy age/month year and not academically/socially. I had the opportunity to hold back my oldest because of his fall b-day i didn't because he is well above average, doing great. I wish I could have this opportunity for my other dc who could benefit from it.

You really can't compare your NT child to the one with special needs in terms of being "ready" for kindergarten.

I would enroll your child in kindergarten when he is supposed to be in kindergarten, and put him in the appropriate placement of the 12:1:2. Guaranteed that most of the kids in a self contained class setting are not necessarily "ready" by their parents standards for kindergarten. But they will do just fine.

Holding back one more year before kindergarten?

I had the same concerns as you but I really did not have the option to hold DD back. She needed her services. She started K at only 4 since her birthday is in October. I was a wreck. She wasn't toilet trained yet, still used a sippy, had no social interaction and was a selective mute so did not talk. They did wonders in that school and I have to say her teachers were amazing and the progress was mind boggling. She was fully toilet trained within a month and started talking within weeks. This year she is repeating K again and mainstreaming to a gen ed class part of the day. I hated sending her to school last year because she was so young but looking back at it now, it was a blessing. There is no way she would be at the point she is now without K last year.

If your DS is currently in a 6:1:2, there is no way you should hold him back, IMO. He won't get all the services he needs or is entitled to unless he starts Kindergarten at 5 (if his bday is August). I asked about this since my DS's birthday misses the cutoff by about a week.

Re: Holding back one more year before kindergarten?

I just had my CSE meeting this week. My child has a late October bday. We got approved for OT, PT and Speech. We also got a 12:1 kindergarten. We are most likely holding her back for another year of pre-K. She is very young and emotionally and socially immature. The school district and her current school know this. We signed off and so we have the services for next year. If we picked a private pre-K in the same school district we would be done. Since we plan on a private pre-K in another school district we will need to reach out to that district and schedule a meeting with them because they would have to approve services. If you hold your kid back you have to pay for whatever school and the district will pay for services if they approve. My school district (which is a good and generous one) told me 2 months ago that under the circumstances they would never approve say a SEIT but we never had one anyway.

The big issue of course is that in a private pre-K the kids don't get the same support they do in a special ed class or school. We found a private pre-K with a class of 14 - class size is a big issue for us. She is high functioning cognitively but very shy and has difficulty with pragmatics and some articulation issues.

Our school district said she would be going to K next year if we skipped so I don't know what is correct.

I just spoke to a woman in the park who said she is holding her son back for a year, he will receive modified sevices and then will enter kindergarten. (She is in Three Village SD).

WTH? Are rules based on school district? Shouldn't it be uniform?Chat Icon

This is true, we have a few families in Three Village that sent their children to private K and then enrolled in K the next year. Both for special needs and typical. The special needs children will not receive special ed services though but would get related services. I do believe it is a district rule.
