Re: Holiday dinners/dinner parties-yes or no to placecards?

I was just thinking of this.

It depends. If it was just my family wouldnt bother - they would just sit wherever they wanted anyway LOL

but if it were MY family and DH's family I would use them to avoid any awkwardness ((we never really all get together))

I always want to do placecards...why you ask??? Because my friggin FIL will WITHOUT FAIL sit in MY SEAT EVERY TIME. Um, hi, my house, I get to sit at the head of the table, thanks....Chat Icon

(not to mention that if I am doing all the cooking and serving I should not have to climb all over my guests to get to the kitchen......)

Honestly, it makes it SO MUCH easier! Invariably, everyone will turn to the host and say, "where do you want us?"Chat Icon

Re: Holiday dinners/dinner parties-yes or no to placecards?

when I have a huge crowd over, I always do place cards. because jsut like a PP stated, someone will sit at the head of the table...at my house...and I do not feel like climbing over people to get to the kitchen.

it depends on who the guests are, we had a few new people at our Thanksgiving dinner this year. I did place cards & it worked out well.

I say NO! And only because the one and only experience i had with them was HORRIBLE!

It was mine and Dh's 2nd year dating and we were spending X-Mas at his Aunts house (I barely knew this side of his family). We get there and theres placecards with my DH and i seperated as well as my DH and his father seperated (this was his fathers last Christmas- he was dying of Liver Cancer at the time). I thought it was insane that they would seperate us when the reason we were there was to celebrate with his father. Still bothers me when I think of it!

Long story short..the one place I've had them was under annoying conditions, making me want to say he!! to the NO BUT if you are having people over or there are people who have difficulties seating themselves for whatever reason, I say you have to know your audience..

You are so right! I was thinking they are not necessary for smaller dinner parties but placecards would solve that problem/bottleneck when everyone moves to the table.

MAM, these are SO CUTE!!!!I love them and I think they add a nice touch to the table, whether you're going for casual, elegant, or formal. As referenced above when I use them I'm sensitive to the seating arrangements of course; separating couples is just GROSS to me!!!!!!
