Re: Holiday Tipping
I used to know my mailwomen for a very long time, she was great!! We gave her a Gift Card last year. This year we have had two different mail people and I don't know what to give.
The garbage men have been great. We have had a lot of trash since we are always re-doing/gutting rooms in our house.

My wife was a letter carrier (mailwoman) for six months (and during xmas).
She said if you have more than one carrier... all the mailmen that do your route are supposed to split the tips.
She also said in case you never see your mailman... you can just place a christmas card inside your mailbox... label it TO MAILMAN... and they will actually take it.
This is OK because "supposedly" if you place a card in the mailbox and a "temp" mailman happens to get the mail that day... they are supposed to split all the tips.
$20 is the norm for an xmas tip. Anything more than $20 buks and the mailmen are supposedly not allowed to accept the card (even though I am sure this rule is broken quite often).

Re: Holiday Tipping
Several people on my block told me that they give the garbage men a case of beer. I'm thinking we might do the same to make it easy.

My garbage men will be getting a NICE holiday tip. They hauled away all my seller's JUNK that he left in front of the house after I took possession of the house.
My wife is still annoyed at the seller for doing this.

We bought our house from my ILs exactly 2 years ago, and beyond having to get rid of their crap, we realized after the snow melted that some of their friends had dumped a bunch of crap in the empty pool since MIL had told them we'd call special pick up for all of it.

Re: Holiday Tipping
There was so much crap left in front of our house... we actually had an inspector show up at my house.
He wasn't even your local garbage guy. This guy was in a suit, tie, and shoes... presumably from the Town of Hempstead.
My wife honestly thought we were going to get fined since he lectured her on the rules of the town. But of course she used that "womanly charm" claiming she didnt know and it wasn't her stuff... and begged him to see if he could get someone to pick the stuff up (we originally had an appointment for the 20th with Special Pickup).
After doing this... somebody showed up an hour later and picked it ALL up! I still can't believe it... I owe my wife BIGTIME for that one.

OMG! What did they just empty the house on the lawn and just take their toothbrush when they moved? People have some nerve!

This was partly my fault that I accepted it in that manner. I am normally "smarter"... but they told me they already scheduled the special pickup and claimed they would get it.
But it literally looked like a garbage dump in front of my house. I wouldn't be surprised if one of my neighbors reported me.
But anyways... back on topic.... for the holidays don't forget to give a little extra to your hair stylist (if you go often).
I have a monthly parking valet spot in the city and they are getting a card.
If you live in an apartment/coop/condo... don't forget to give your porter something (I gave mine $50). Give your super something if he has done work for you during the year. Same goes for a doorman.

Re: Holiday Tipping
Also... if you have something similar to an ebay business and get a lot of UPS packages delivered... you could tip your UPS guy a couple buks.
Especially if they leave the package at your door for your convienence when you aren't home.
UPS puts themselves on the line when they do this because if the package gets stolen while they left it at your door (when you didn't sign a signature waiver)... they are supposed to be responsible for it.
