holiday tipping question
DH and i are spending our first holiday season in our home this year. I know people usually tip their garbage men (regular and recycle) and mailman. Is there anyone else to tip? also, this may sound crazy but how exactly do you give it to them?? We are never home when the garbage men come. and of course the question that everyone hates...what amount would you suggest??

Re: holiday tipping question
Mailman - $30 (although just found out that they can't legally accept more than $25)
Garbage - $30 (we tape it to the underside of the lid - some people listen for the truck and run it out)
UPS - don't go by me, I tip mine absurdly b/c he's AMAZING and I order online like it's my job
housekeeper if you have - double what you normally pay them

holiday tipping question
I don't tip anyone but our UPS guy and the only reason we tip him is because my DH owns a business and UPS delivers daily and huge boxes

I am curious what do you tip your UPS guy? I have a similar situation where my UPS guy comes daily. I am trying to figure out if I am under tipping or over tipping.
To answer the OP:
Mailman: $40-50 (he does more than just deliver envelopes) Garbage: $20 per man (three guys so $60 total) Cleaning lady: 1 weeks pay (they come weekly for me)

Re: holiday tipping question
You guys have the same UPS driver all the time?
We can get multiple deliveries a day, but I feel like we don't have a steady driver and when we do have someone who comes regularly, they seem to pull them and put two different people on during the holidays.

holiday tipping question
We tip our mailman and the newspaper delivery guy. We didnt tip our garbage men for almost 2 years because they were horrible (they would leave our cans in the middle of the street or next door). But we got some new garbage men this year and they have been great so we're tipping them this year.

I don't know because DH does it and it's a business expense for him so I don't really get involved. I'm sure it was in the 40-50 range. The guy is so great. We get heavy boxes and when I was pg he would put them where ever I needed them to be out of the way.

Re: holiday tipping question
We must be cheap (or just poor lol). We give the mailman $20 and the garbage guys $20 (which they split between the 2 of them).

Re: holiday tipping question
Mail lady = $20 Garbage men = $20 each because they do a good job. UPS = $25-30 (We see the same driver all the time and he's a nice guy, not ever crabby when we get something big or when we get a billion small boxes. DH gets packages for work almost daily.)
We personally hand it over with a "Merry Christmas" and a "thank you for all you do!".

I have one primary driver that has the route and he has had my route for years. During the holidays they may have a second and third driver in different trucks doing additional deliveries because there are so many packages to be delivered. My primary driver always does my evening pickups so some days I may see two different UPS drivers at different times.

holiday tipping question
Ok, this may be a really ignorant question (this is our first house and I didn't realize people do this....eekk), but how do you get the tips to the garbage men, mail carrier, UPS drivers? We are never home when any of these people come.

Re: holiday tipping question
$60 for garbage men ($20/each @ 3 men) $30 for mailman but not sure about this year - we've only had our regular guy about 1/4 of the time, and the rest of the time it's never the same person (and they all suck).
Mail we always gave it to him personally. Garbage we will go out if we see them, or leave on can (we don't put trash at the curb).

Mail man- leave an envelope in the mailbox Garbage men- tape and envelope with a bow on it (so they don't miss it) on the side of the garbage can

holiday tipping question
We give 15-20 for each garbage man. There are three and they do a great job. We usually wait and give it between christmas and new years when DH is home to run it out to them.
The mailman gets 20-30. We get tons of packages so he comes to the door almost daily (our mailboxes are at the street so he doesn't typically leave the truck). He's super friendly and always asks how we're doing, waits as long as it takes me to come to the door, and is the only adult I get to see daily besides DH being stuck home with a newborn lol. I sometimes leave it in the mailbox but I prefer to hand it to him to make sure it gets to our regular guy.
We get tons of UPS deliveries but the guys is usually smoking a cigarette and on his phone so he's too busy to even knock on the door. I don't bother to tip him.

Re: holiday tipping question
We tip our mailman - $50. DH is home between Christmas and New Years so he'll hand him a card with the cash inside.
We tip our dog groomer too. There's 2 girls that normally take care of our dog...and since our dog is not the best at the groomer (they distract him with cheese while they use the clippers on his legs) - we give those $10 each.

holiday tipping question
I don't tip our mailman, I just feel like I haven't gotten a bonus/tip for the past five years so I don't have it to pass on.
I do tip our garbage men 3 of them, usually $60. they happen to come on days we are home and my kids wave to them every time and they wave back. they have also given my kids xmas gifts the past 3 years. and they are nice gifts.

This is my VERY humble opinion.
Do you have any idea how much the (even) $10 would get you?
The fact is you get better service when you tip. You shouldnt have to, but its fact.
I didnt have much last year but I tipped my mailman $20. This year, without fail, if I had a small package she would run it to the house rather than leaving it in the mailbox.
this again is my very humble opinion.
