Holiday wishes...
Wishing you all a happy holiday (right in the nick of time for the end of Hannukah...whew)!
While I’d love to say “May the next year bring you peace & happiness”, most of the women on this site are about to embark on the terrible two’s (otherwise known as the terrible 18 months in my household). I know that the peace part isn’t going to happen until those moms are ready to question whether your child’s insanity runs in your family or DH’s (I’m still questioning DH’s). You won’t need the happiness – you have it. We all know that feeling of having your child fall asleep on your chest, the feeling of staring at your child & thinking ‘I made him or her’, the feeling that we had the honor of participating in a miracle.
So this year, I’ll wish you all something different.
I wish you patience. The patience to deal with whatever stage of development your child has reached, the patience to deal with the unexpected and the enduring patience to deal with new trials & tribulations that are coming your way. In our house, we give out patience to our kids. We literally reach into our pocket & pretend to hand out patience. Our kids “eat” it to gives them more patience to wait in line, etc. I still remember sitting down on the coach after some catastrophe at work & yelling “I can’t believe I have to deal with this tonight!” There was my 2.5 year old holding out his cupped hand & said “Here Mommy! I have some patience for you.” I wish you all bucketloads.
I wish you realism. May that ideal mother that we all have in our minds be banished. The woman that has her act completely together can be completely derailed by her child’s diarrhea on her way to make the train (thanks Joseph!). I know I’m not the first mother to be relieved that daycare doesn’t allow homemade food or that Walbaums opened at 7am so I could pick up the cupcakes. We’ve all learned a split second too late that the baby can roll (off the bed/changing table). We are all human, we all screw up. While MILs run the spectrum on this board, they all have one thing in common. They created the man you love - and they were in your shoes with your DH, worrying whether they were doing it right too –even if some would never admit it.
Be kind to yourself this year. Don’t wait for others to be kind to you. Don’t wait for anyone to say “I’ll take the baby – go get a manicure.” Make your own plans. Don’t feel guilty about it. It’s what will make you a better parent. It’s why some dads can put in a guest caregiver appearance & tell you how easy he thought it was because the baby slept the full hour you were gone. You deserve your own time, developing your own interests too. I think benign neglect is one of the best things you can give your child. Finding out that DH did not feed the kids lunch almost put me over the edge. Realizing if they were hungry they could ask for lunch was a revelation. Hearing that they decided to eat lunch under the table & made themselves yogurt sandwiches was another revelation. They actually could fend for themselves if necessary. I was in college before I made my first haircut appointment. I probably could have used more benign neglect.
Remember there is nothing that we will go through that generations upon generations of women did not. Millions of women before you dealt with everything from potty training to health issues (theirs & their child’s). If anything, this website has proved one thing -- that You are not alone.
Most of all I wish you all a regular year – filled with normalcy - spectacular normalcy.
