It seems overwhelming because you're seeing an entire list up-front. It's no where near as bad as it sounds. DS is in 2nd grade now, and he knew more than half that list before his first day. DD is starting K in the fall, and she knows a significant portion of that list as well.

ok word of advice, STOP READING THAT WEBSITE!!! ITS DRIVING YOU CRAZY!! LOL

this is a list of what they will "learn" in kindergarden, NOT what they are suppose to know by then. PLUS, its worded more challenging then what it is. Actually, Liam knows about half that list already and is almost 2.5.

Re: Holy Cramolies! Kindergarten is TOUGH - Criteria

The expectations and the standards for these kids have increased DRASTICALLY since we have been in school! However, these standards are geared towards the END of kindergarten. You will be amazed to see how much your child will grow. After teaching, kindergarten, second, third, and fourth grade... I have to say that kindergarten is hands down the biggest year for growth! This will all be taught in the classroom and you will be reinforcing at home. Of course, it is wonderful to get a head start though! Every kid is treated like a blank slate when they enter kindergarten because kids are coming form all different backgrounds and preschools. Some might not have even attended preschool!

Upon entering kindergarten, I think it would be beneficial for her to have an understanding of:

How to write her name
Identify colors, shapes, numbers
Be able to draw shapes and numbers
Say (not recite) the alphabet
Identify most of the letters in the alphabet out of order (start with uppercase)
Know her address and phone number
Know how to take a picture walk through a book
Draw a picture of herself with parts in the correct places

I agree with this. My oldest is only 3.5 but, he knows almost this entire list. I think it all depends what they are exposed to. If they haven't been exposed to it prior to K, they will catch on quick once they are.
