Home Glucose Testing - Added a 2nd question - Thanks!
So the monitor is supposed to come in the mail today and then I have to make an appt with the high risk doctor to learn how to use it and all that good stuff. (Not looking forward to it)
So my question is for the ladies who had/has GD, does the testing needle hurt? I mean I don't really care, it cant hurt more than labor right? Just wondering...
Thanks.
2nd question - If you do have to test, will I be doing this for the rest of the pregnancy or just until they see how my levels are on a daily basis?

Re: Home Glucose Testing
It doesn't hurt...I personally dont have GD, but it is just a tiny needle prick on your finger...much like the ones that they did when you were tested for the AFP....just a tiny quick poke, and then it is over..... Good Luck

Re: Home Glucose Testing
No it doesn't hurt. It's just a little prick. Be sure to alternate fingers every time you test. Do it between the middle and side of your finger. If you go right in the center then it will hurt.

Re: Home Glucose Testing
Doesn't really hurt - just a little more than a pinch. It really is all a matter of getting use to it. I remember my first day trying I wasted so many needles and I was so nervous - I kept flinching and missing or not getting it deep enough to get any blood. But in a day or two I was a pro!

Re: Home Glucose Testing
It's the same as the AFP test prick. I have more trouble with the anticipation than the actual pain

Re: Home Glucose Testing
nope, just a tiny prick. My stepmother has diabetes and I make her check my sugar on that little machine every now and then.

2nd question - rest of your pregnancy unfortunately. They have to make sure you don't spike and require insulin at some point. I had to do it 4 times a day from when they found out I had it to the end. Luckily mine was controlled by GD and never needed insulin (PS I had it with my last pregnancy and not with this one).

Until the rest of the pregnancy....unfortunately I have to take insulin which honestly hasn't been as bad as I thought...it's more of an inconvenience. You should be able to control your GD by diet....Good Luck
