Home heating oil.
I'm a new home owner and am rather ignorant in the ways of home heating oil billing. Yesterday I got a rundown of how my billing will work from Petro. Obviously, I know we will have to pay for the actually oil, but what's with the $209/month charge? Is that for "service"?

Re: Home heating oil.
sounds like they have put you on a budget. That's the cost of oil per month based on the previous owner's usage.

Yeah, that's what the paperwork said. Is that a good price? Our house is rather small.

Re: Home heating oil.
there's no way to know. You need to ask them what you are paying per gallon. Call them.
the price of oil has gone up so dramatically, that it could cost over $2K a year to heat your home albeit small.
last year it cost $1700/year for our house which is about 1800 sq ft. 4 bedroom, two levels. that was last year though.

Ask them how they are coming up with this $209 a month charge. I think that's ridiculously cheap, and you are going to be paying extra at some point and may get slapped with a huge overage at the end of your 12 months.
Here's an example: The average small house probably uses 700 gallons a year(probably even more but let's just say 700 gallons).
If they lock you in at a current market rate of $4.29 a gallon, 700 gallons will cost you about $3000 year for heating oil. That's $250 a month.
If you end up using more than 700 gallons which is very possible, it will be more than $250 a month. If your rate is higher than $4.29 it will be more as well.
$209 is not nearly enough and IMO a "teaser price" to get you to sign.
