Our house is located on a busy street and we are looking into home security systems. Its a bit overwhelming.

Any recommendations?
What's the cost for installation?

We have ADT and we got a special where they installed it for $99 and we pay about $200 every 3 months for the monitoring. Check your valpaks when they come in the mail. They have specials all the time. We've only had ADT and we haven't had any issues with them. And their customer service is great.

The absolute best thing I ever did was hire a security consultant to do the security at my house. I bypassed all those large companies (ADT, Slomins, Brinks, etc.) with their "basic" no-frills system and I had my guy do everything from doors, windows, fire, and surveillance (video). Since he did everything and wasn't affiliated with any big box company, I was able to take my installed system and connect to it any monitoring system I wanted (for way cheaper per month).

I paid more for the install, but I got way more and my monthly monitoring is less. I am also month to month and I don't have to deal with any 3 or 5 year contract. I have computer cable modem IP for monitoring and cellular backup (no dial landline phone). I think my monitoring is only $27 a month which is super cheap, especially for computer IP.

Installation is going to depend on what you want covered and what features you want. Companies like ADT and Slomins will offer you a basic system and install very cheap, but it usually doesn't cover much and monitoring is an arm and a leg. My DH does alarm systems and the equipement for ours, which includes every window and door, smoke detectors, CO detector, and a few motions was around $1k. Obviously labor was free. And my monitoring is like $18 a month. He did a job for someone recently that ran like $6k because they wanted so much more...cameras, more entry points, etc. Def shop around and know what you want to cover.

We just got an alarm system through FrontPoint (alarm.com) and really like them. You buy and install your own equipment but you get the same monitoring as the big name people.

One of my friends did a TON of research about alarm companies and he suggested this company (it's who he uses too). After doing my own research, i liked them too so i went for it :)

We have vivint. I don't know the pricing bc my DH handled it but I know if was the most affordable and got the most. It's also more high tech than the others. We have touch screen pads that connect you directly with the service if alarm goes off or you request emergency services. (I called 911 through the touch screen when my daughter fell down the stairs and it was great). We also have aps on our phones so we can turn off/on the alarm remotely or even if we are just too lazy to get off the couch

Try Kovacs - I had system installed by ADT - but switched monitoring to Kovacs.

We use general. It was $399 to install (basic package was $99 but we added on basically everything they offered) and our monitoring is $39/month but we save $15/month on our homeowner's insurance.
