Homeless Woman Who Lived Undetected in Japanese Man's Closet for a Year Caught
TOKYO — A homeless woman who sneaked into a man's house and lived undetected in his closet for a year was arrested in Japan after he became suspicious when food mysteriously began disappearing.
Police found the 58-year-old woman Thursday hiding in the top compartment of the man's closet and arrested her for trespassing, police spokesman Hiroki Itakura from southern Kasuya town said Friday.
The resident of the home installed security cameras that transmitted images to his mobile phone after becoming puzzled by food disappearing from his kitchen over the past several months.
One of the cameras captured someone moving inside his home Thursday after he had left, and he called police believing it was a burglar. However, when they arrived they found the door locked and all windows closed.
"We searched the house ... checking everywhere someone could possibly hide," Itakura said. "When we slid open the shelf closet, there she was, nervously curled up on her side."
The woman told police she had no place to live and first sneaked into the man's house about a year ago when he left it unlocked.
She had moved a mattress into the small closet space and even took showers, Itakura said, calling the woman "neat and clean."

I have nightmares about this - just the basement! Seriously, just this week I had the man living in my basement nightmare - it's been recurring since I was a kid, 1000 times!

I feel bad for her as well, Cant the police help this woman out, Like finding shelter for her, I know they had to arrest her for trespassing, I hope the guy drops the charges and realize that she didn't mean any harm or threat to anyone, She just needed a roof over her head, Yes maybe she could have thought it out better and seeked help, BUT, At that time she camped out in this man's house for security.

Maybe it's me. I would be so creeped out that someone lived in my house & could watch my every move, hear every conversation, I would press charges & not think twice about it.
She needed a roof over her head & food. Maybe she could have thought it out better? I think definitely she could have thought it out better. In jail, she'll have a roof over her head & food 3 times a day.

So sad. I'm sure this women is also mentally disturbed. I hope she gets the help she needs. Very creepy for the man who owned that house and another thing...How big was that damn closet!?

EXTREMELY creepy and yes i do feel bad for her. but how the heck do you move a mattress into a closet and it took him a YEAR to realize that he had a "roommate"? very bizarre.
anyone else have the image of the girl in the closet from "The Grudge" when they were reading this?

It's a creepy story, and a very sad one too. I truly hope she gets the hope she needs.
I don't have to worry about anyone living in my closet, they are packed to the ceilings! LOL

In the last house I lived in had a craw space opening in the garage and one in the house... So you could go in the Attic either by the house or garage... To service the air conditioning unit. One day I came home and the attic door in the garage was opened... I don't think I had a good night sleep for the next few days when I saw that...

you're kidding right???
someone breaks into your house, uses your things, hides for a year and essentially threatens the security of your house and you honestly think he should be nice to her? i'm not trying to be rude, but i just can't understand that thinking!
your house is YOUR house. no one has a right to be in there without your permission. there are other options that she could have considered. i'd be scared of my OWN security after something like this happens. and it's not like it was for a day or two...it was a YEAR!!!

I was thinking the same exact thing! In Japan rooms and closets are small and practically non-existent. How the heck can a person let alone a mattress fit in there????
