i have first hand experience from there, and my kids would go to private school if i lived there. that's all i'll say.

I totally agree with this. My DH, his father, mother and grandfather all graduated from there. My SIL did as well and stayed in Lynbrook but moved into the Lynbrook school district which is much better. My DH tells many stories about the kids from Lakeview who he went to school with--many ofwhom were on welfare and came from terrible circumstances. Just my $.02 so please no bashing Chat Icon

that is true (some kids who go there being on welfare), but it is not the reason my kids would go to private school. the student make up is not the reason either

there are kids on welfare in every district--doesn't make a district good or bad

Yes there are. And yes I agree with you about not making it a good district or bad school district--I never said that. The black/white thing is not an issue for me or my DH. The high incidence of crime and drugs in Lakeview is. We have family who is a cop there and it's not a good area. The OP asked for honest opinions and that is ours Chat Icon

Drugs are everywhere. Sayville and Seaford come to mind that have a HUGE problem with drugs. Crime is everywhere. They are not moving to Lakeview, they want to move to Malverne.

My DH grew up here and we are back living here and will remain here.Chat Icon I feel completely safe here and feel completely safe that my children will be going to Malverne SD. I would never put my children in harms way.

If your kid is going to be bad or do drugs, they will anywhere. Raise them right, you won't have to worryChat Icon

I am not commenting on Malverne because I dont know.. (i willsay I wouldnt do malverne with VS schools because they are not what they were when I went there) but.. that same Lakeview section also goes to RVC schools. RVC schools has section 8 housing - and RVC is still considered very good schools.

What always strikes me about this debate is how people say that schools aren't "What they once were." I'd like to know exactly what that means to people. Test scores? Safety? It seems to me to be a euphemism for not the color they once were. I'm not trying to attack any other posters, I would really just like to be informed about what that means in other people's opinions.

When issues like this come up it doesnt always mean people are talking about color.

FYI I have cousins and siblings who attended after me AND dh. DHs cousin currently attends and i have/had family members on the BOE in 2 of the VS districts. I also have several family members still living in VS.

My opinion comes from what I ave been told about how the schools are in comparision to how they were when I attended. And lets be honest I didnt think they werent that outstanding when I attended.

I would buy there as long as the neighborhood was safe, your kids can still get a quality education...

I wasn't only referring to what you posted - but since you replied I'll refer to this post; again my question is, what does it mean? What does the change refer to?

And I'm also a VS alum, and currently a teacher in the district. So it intrigues me how people define, "what it used to be as." And for me, educationally, my experience was excellent. But perhaps that was just my experience.

Just curious how old her children are and what her reasoning is for not sending them there?

I have yet to hear a valid reason for people not to send their children there.

I am not talking about the High School but the Elementary and Middle School.

I don't live there, but my cousin does, and she sends her kids to private school. I know one of her concerns were safety. That is her opinion and her choice, your kid, your choice. If someone asked for an opinion, we can only offer what we hear/know. Which seems many here feel the same way.

Before I bought my home, I did my research, checked the test scores etc., I asked other people their opinions but I also WENT to the school at bell time myself, which I suggest anyone buying in a neighborhood do (as well as visiting the supermarkets, nail salons, libraries, those people will be your neighborsChat Icon

Safety? I am just wondering if anyone has any legitimate reports on the safety in the schools or again does it just go back to the racial make up of the schools.

And it is everyone's opinion but I hate these threads for all towns!!

It is rude IMO. People live in these towns and I would never in a million years post on a thread knowing that others live there.

And it is my personal and financial obligation to support and defend our SD till the day I no longer have a reason to.

Hear say is a dangerous thing.

You know what everything is relative. When I was looking to buy people told me ..oh stay away from this town, stay away from that one, my boss told me to stay off the entire south shoreChat Icon Chat Icon , some people told me the entire north shore was for only the uber rich, everyone has an opinion.

For the record I found beautifulllll towns on both shores, altho we did end up on the north and are NOT uber rich !Chat Icon

If I were to listen to everyone, I would have had to die in the cityChat Icon

Well I am sure whatever reason a person does not send their children there is valid. Maybe not valid to you, but it is valid to my friend. She has lived in Malverne for years now, and grew up in the town next door. Her children are still very young, but she has always said she would never send them there. And besides if you love it then let your opinion be known, no reason to get mad about it. Not everyone is going to love your opinion, just like your not going to love everyone elses. But this is a public board full of the publics opinions. No person is going to not send their child somewhere based on hear say, I am sure research was done.
