No, I dont think so...but isnt that usually how it is - at least with the shower and wedding itself.

No less then a year. Between 8-10 months time
ETA: I guess I am just b/c we are expected to give pretty large gifts for all these things and when they are all roped together.. along with other weddings, bridal showers, etc. money gets really tight

Traditionally, engagement parties are only done for those who will be engaged for over a year. They haven't always been done.
They were popular in the 1950's and 1960's but then fell by the wayside for a few decades.
I once knew a couple who met first week of Feb, engaged in April, engagement paty in June, shower in August and married November... all in the same year. Oh, they were both in their mid thirties and made over $400,000 combined each year It's not like they needed a registry.

Well not a shower and a wedding but maybe if you tack and e-party onto that. I mean if you're getting married in less than a year why do you need and e-party? Just to get more gifts?

still gotcha beat.
what irked me the most was that this couple had already been engaged for 6 months and THEN decided to have an e-party. Her shower was 6 weeks after that and then the wedding was another 4 weeks after that.
If they are having the e-party close to when they actually got engaged, then I think it's okay since the engagement sounds like it's only going to be about 1 year long.

YES, that is why we didnt have an engagement party b/c we felt it was unfair to guest to have an engagement, shower and wedding all within 8 months. Its a HUGE expense for them, we wanted to be considerate to that.

I don't give for engagement parties, I ususally RSVP no. I will go to the shower, I always skip the bachalorette party(too much money).

Yeah basically since the bride has no $$ and the families are not helping and I guess they want extra $$ to help pay for the wedding since all the bills will be on the grooms back

I'm with Janice...not big on e-parties...
I actually felt bad that people had to shell out so much money for a shower and wedding in such a short period of time. (but I had no control over the shower anyway).

that sux, I hate the whole thought of an e-party unless it says your presence is gift enough. I would give a small amount.

I felt the same way....There was no way I was going to hold a fundraiser on top of it.

Sorry you're getting hit with all of this. Why don't they stay engaged longer so there is more time for them to make & save $$?
But to answer your original question - the people I know that have had engagement parties used them as fundraisers so if I did go, I gave a gift, but not cash

Re: Honestly.. do you get a little annoyed if you have
I feel like a wedding card is to help them start their life.
A shower is to give them a gift for their home.(no need for housewarming gift then, maybe a little something, but nothing big)
An engagement party card is for what? I am prepaying for the party that I will be invited to? If you want to celebrate your engagement fine, just don't expect cards.

I think engagement parties are always tacky. I know I'm in the minority on that, but it's JMO.

Re: Honestly.. do you get a little annoyed if you have
DH just talked to his brother and he says they *need* to have one b/c they need money for the wedding.
First of all right now he has enough $$ in his savings account to pay for the whole wedding. ( even though it would leave no $$ for a down payment on a house) 2nd Thats really not the point of an Eparty.. although he brought up the " I shell out $$ for everyone elses..." 3rd If you cant afford it WHY get married in less then 1 year???? Why not push it back to Summer 07 and give yourselves and extra year to save
I mean they are 32 and 35 years old give me a break

First of all it would be so hard for me to go to the party knowing this, but I understand its your BIL
Second, never realized that engagements were big for monetary gifts? I usually get a gift or a GC to household type goods store. I thought most people did the same. I think he is going to be surprised by all the frames and candlesticks he gets!
