Hospital Pre-Approval from Insurance Company? Are we supposed to get one?

I didnt' receive anything from my insurance company stating that I've been pre-approved for my hopsital stay when the baby is born. I know a friend of mine got something from her insurance company stating she got 48 hours for a vaginal birth and 72 hours for a c-section.

Did you guys get a letter like this from your insurance company? Should I call mine?

It's going to depend on your insurance.
My insurance card said I had to call for preapproval for hosptial stays- including delivery.

I forgot to call. However my Dr's office called to get the approval for me because I got a letter the other day saying that I was preapproved etc.

Call you insurance company to make sure.

Sometimes you have to pre-approve, depending on your policy. I would check with the hospital, because as long as the hospital is in-network it is their responsibility to do the pre-approval with the insurance company.

Aetna said I don't have to worry about a pre-approval. The drs. office and Aetna take care of it.

I remeber getting a vague letter like that from my insurance company, maybe a month ago (around 15 weeks). You can call just to make sure but it didn't look like anything important.

Some Dr. offices will do it for you. Mine did once I was out of my first trimester. I would call your insurance company to inquire.

Mine did it as well.

When I filled out my pre-admission form for the hospital, I needed the number from the letter to put on it (and then the hospital never received the pre-admission form).

That's funny that you just posted this, because I got one yesterday in the mail. It was from our insurance company authorizing me 2 days for vaginal, and if anything else, the doc will notify them and they'll authorize it! I'm also not even due til August 3rd, so I'm glad they are on top of their game!

I called the insurance company and they said they didn't have anything from the doctor. So I called the doctors office and they said they don't contact the insurance company until a few weeks before you are due. Which i thought was strange!!!

We have United Healthcare and have always gotten a preapproval in the mail. Usually it comes super early (around 8 week mark), because 2 times I m/c'd after the letter came for preapproval for the delivery.

I have Empire BCBS which requires you get pre-approval for pregnancy. I had to give them notice of the pregnancy within the first three months. After I did that, I got a letter from them approving a 48 hr hospital stay for vaginal birth.

The balance billing is done only if your hospital is out-of-network. Girls, please make sure your hospital is in the network to avoid this. As long as your hospital is in the network, u do not have to worry about the balance billing. Your only responsibility will be the copay or deductible/coinsurance.

Also check with your doctor/hospital to make sure they did the pre-approval, as it is their responsibility for in-network services. Hope this helps!

I think it's all handled when I do my pre-registration with the hospital (it was with DS).

Actually, any private hospital has the right to balance bill whether they are in network or not..it has to do with their contract with the specific plan.

Re: Hospital Pre-Approval from Insurance Company? Are we supposed to get one?

i think it depends on your insurance company/policy.

i have GHI. with my DS in 2007 i didnt have to do anything. now they changed their policy and they require pre-certification for all hospital stays. i was actually at my OB today (im 25 wks) and they told me to make sure i call and get the pre-cert # from my insurance.
i would double check with your insurance just to be sure...
