HOSPITAL STAY?
How long do they typically keep you in the hospital now for a vb? I know a few years back it was just overnight, but now I hear it's longer.
I am delivering in huntington and wanted to pack my bags, then I realized I wasn't sure how long I would be there.

i believe 2 nights
that's what I thought
2 nights for vag, 3-4 for c-section (as long as they are both standard and no-complications)

Re: HOSPITAL STAY?
we were told in our childbirth class as well as the hospital that it's 2 nights.
They told us though that if you have the baby at 11:59pm say on a Monday, that that would count as your first night and you would go home Wednesday. If you have the baby at midnight then you would go home Thursday.

Re: HOSPITAL STAY?
It depends on the hospital, your birth & what your Dr allows.
If I have a VBAC they would keep me 3 days. Typical is overnight - 2 days. C-section is 4-6 days.

Re: HOSPITAL STAY?
Legally insurances HAVE TO PAY a minimum stay of 48 hours after a vaginal birth adn I think 72 for a c-section.
This being said there is not a minimum time you must stay it all depends on the OB and pediatrician.
Your OB or midwife hase to write a discharge order in order for you to be released from the hospital and the pediatrician examining the baby at teh hospital has to write an order for the baby to be dischanrged.
So if 6 hours after teh birth you want to go home all your OB needs to do is write a discharge order for you to be released and the pediatrician needs to write a discharge order for the baby to be released.......
Most people usually stay until they kick you out but if you do want to go home early just know that you can.....Make sure you tell your OB right away. A lot of times its easy to get the OB to write the discharge order pretty much anytime during the day but if your baby is born AFTER the pediatricians see the baby which they do 1X a day usually you have to wait until the next day until the pediatrician has examined the baby and will write the discharge papers for the baby. The toher option is if your personal pediatrician had privledges at the hospital you delivered at you can ask them to come in, check the baby and write the order.
Hope this helps!
