Hospital Stay Question
I'm full of picky questions this morning! When does your insurance start counting your stay in the hospital as a day? Is this from the minute you are admitted for labor?
My insurance covers 2 days for a vaginal delivery, and I was wondering when the 2 days begin.
Thanks!

Re: Hospital Stay Question
If you stay longer I would guess the hospital codes the extra days differently -- I wouldn't worry about it, if you are still at the hospital there is a good reason!

Re: Hospital Stay Question
I think they mean 2 days after a vaginal delivery. I don't think they are counting the labor.

Re: Hospital Stay Question
I was admitted at 11:30 Tuesday night, delivered Wednesday morning, discharged Friday.
I "think" they count the over-nights.

Re: Hospital Stay Question
Usually they count from when you deliver. Like 2 women go in to L&D at 5pm on Tuesday, 1 delivers @ 10pm Tue, her 2 nights are Tue & Wed; the other delivers @ 2am Wed, her 2 nights are Wed & Thurs.

Re: Hospital Stay Question
Thanks for the info! I should probably double check with my insurance, but this makes sense. I was thinking if you have a long labor, you really wouldn't have much time to recuperate at all.

Re: Hospital Stay Question
My suggestion is that you call your insurance provider and ask the question. From my experience and knowledge - it's from the minutes that you are admitted to labor and delivery to stay. It goes by dates not by 24 hour periods.

Re: Hospital Stay Question
yo get charged $$$ as soon as yor are admitted, but they count nights of stay AFTER you deliver and if you deliver really really late at night (say 11 pm) yo can sometimes stretch another day out of it..

Re: Hospital Stay Question
I think it depends on the hospital. I'm delivering at Huntington and asked this question during a class I took. They said if I deliver before 10:00PM that counts as Day 1, and if I deliver after 10:00PM the next day counts as Day 1.
