Hospitals and supplies
Let me start by saying that I abhor our current President and none of what I’m about to say is intended to take heat off the federal government. However, does anyone else think it was at least partly the responsibility of the hospitals to provide adequate PPE for their staffs? Especially during the 6 weeks that we spent waiting for this thing to come here? I think it’s because I used to work in fundraising and I know how incredibly well endowed some of these private Manhattan hospitals are (not talking about Elmhurst or other public city hospitals). These places throw fundraising dinners that would make Louis XVI blush. And yet they failed to provide adequate numbers of the most protection for their staffs? If I was a hospital worker I would be directing at least part of my ire to the executive staff and Board of Trustees. Just a thought I had that I haven’t really heard anyone else talking about.

Re: Hospitals and supplies
I wondered the same. Did anyone see this article:

Eta: I also saw articles that Cuomo was told 5 years ago they needed more ventilators to be prepared for a pandemic that they didn’t have close to enough and he turned down the purchase of close to 20,000 ventilators. Lots of missed opportunities to learn from in this experience.

They ARE mad at their employers. There is actually a movement going around where nurses are refusing to work without adequate PPE.
But given the demand there are now shortages. We don't have enough ventilators in NY, regardless of what trump says.

https://www.factcheck.org/2020/03/trumps-misleading-ventilator-counter-punch-at-cuomo/ He wasn't actually told to buy more ventilators. There was an advisory board that said if we had another 1918 flu epidemic, there wouldn't be enough. It would have cost almost $600 million dollars to purchase the 16,000 ventilators. I can't imagine any voter thinking it would be a good idea to spend more than half a billion dollars for a "just in case, but until then, we'll just put them in the closet and hopefully never need them". Sure, in hindsight, it would have been a good idea, but at the time, he didn't turn down the purchase, he wasn't recommended to purchase them, and we still wouldn't have enough even with those.

Re: Hospitals and supplies
https://www.state.gov/the-united-states-announces-assistance-to-combat-the-novel-coronavirus/ The Federal government sent literally tons of PPE to China right when we started getting cases in the US.
FEBRUARY 7, 2020
This week the State Department has facilitated the transportation of nearly 17.8 tons of donated medical supplies to the Chinese people, including masks, gowns, gauze, respirators, and other vital materials. These donations are a testament to the generosity of the American people.

Fact checker isn’t fact it’s another side to the story. The one fact I’m trying to point out is that there were a lot of missed opportunities here along the way. Hopefully we learn as a country and come through this stronger. I’m getting texts in my county from the office of emergency management asking for the donation of disinfectant wipes. How ridiculous. The stores have been gutted for weeks and I’m down to my last few containers myself. The hospitals should be ashamed of themselves. Billions of dollars - truly disgusting.
Eta: speak for yourself. I would have gladly said pay the money. For years they have predicted this could even happen as a result of terrorism. I would have bought the ventilators
