Free formula not being given in some city hospitals?

I hope this doesnt happen in Long Island. They are banning free formula in some hospitals so women will breast feed instead.

I think that is so wrong.

I never produced milk. I am completely incapable of breast feeding - why would they deny my child food at such a hospital???? I dont get it - and its not fair....

I am sure I'm not the only mom not capable of breast feeding my child....

Re: Formula ban in city hospitals????

I dont know how that is going to work.
Most women choose not to BF. What are they going to do, feed baby and charge for how much they ate?

Crazy, messed up world we live in.

Thats the point - if they make it inconvenient to FF, then women have no choice to BF - that would be fine if everyone is capable of doing it....

Re: Formula ban in city hospitals????

Who is "they"?

The hospitals get huge benefits from the formula companies.

The formula companies get free advertising from the hospitals.

I can't imagine this is true.

Yup...You are right!

Re: Formula ban in city hospitals????

Beth had posted a link to a NYT article about this a few months back and I had the same exact reaction as Liza. I never produced a drop of milk with either kid. I would have loved to BF but it just wasn't happening.

Plus, with Sarah the nurses were very generous and gave us a month's worth of formula when we left. I think of the people who make too much to qualify for WIC but are struggling to make ends meet living in our area and know that the free formula is a blessing to them.

ETA: Link to Beth's thread

Re: Formula ban in city hospitals????

Are they going to charge you for formula use. It's insane to take formula away. What are they gonna do starve all the babies...

It's just insane! I know some women choose not to BF. I was one of those women but seriously what about women that don't have a choice and can't BF???

Why would they do this????

Re: Formula ban in city hospitals????

I am not sure if it is happening - it seems that it is something that people have been fighting for a while now

and it seems from the articles I am finding - it is FREE formula.
They will probably just charge you for it

Noone should ever be forced to do anything they can't do. Why would they be so cruel? It's so unfair...

That is so unfair!!!
So, if I decide not to try and BF #2 (When the time comes) (I did BF DS for about a month or so, and my supply was very low) Im going to have to send DH out to BUY formula at CVS or somewhere!!!

Not Fair and I hope its NOT True!

Why would channel 2 news lie though? I mean, I know you cant trust media, but they arent like the enquirer or something - and thats a pretty big thing to just make up....

Re: Formula ban in city hospitals????

"Doctors also said breastfeeding helps mom's health too and burns 500 calories a day. Then there's the cost of formula. Supporters say this may be the best dining deal around.

About a quarter of women who deliver at city hospitals choose to breastfeed. City officials want that number to triple by 2010."

Thats all fine and good, but that should be the moms choice - there are MANY children who grew up just fine on formula (myself included)

Re: Formula ban in city hospitals????

I just read the article and I am so poed! Who are these people to dictate whether or not you BF your child. It is not for everyone and you should be able to have the option. Some people can't and now they have to pay for the formula. It's just not fair. I didn't BF DD and don't plan on BFing any other child we have. What is this world coming to?

I LOVE how the city health officials decide what should be attached to my te-tas! Chat Icon Whatever!

Then these officals can speak to my Te-tas and explain to them how it could be done (cause I can not BF)

Thats what I'm saying - have they forgotten that there are people out there who physically can not? Its like - lets remove the ramps in places so those people in wheelchairs will HAVE to walk - don't they know its better exercise anyway? Chat Icon

Re: Formula ban in city hospitals????

I think it comes down to money. Of course the babies will have to eat and they cannot force moms to BF (really!!). They will make more difficult and charge for it because they know moms who don'twant to/can't BF will pay.
