hotels in south africa
a few of you responded about SA beforee...can you recommend hotels - in cape town and along the garden route?
(if not specific hotels, specific towns...cape town seems pretty big...and not sure where is worth staying along the garden route)
thanks!

Re: hotels in south africa
I'm sorry-I don't have any hotel to suggest. Maybe check Trip Advisor? I also saw a South Africa deal on groupon-maybe you can piggy back off the hotels they recommend?
Best of Luck-that will be an amazing trip!

thanks. the groupon actually had me start thinking about SA, but the more i researched their choices, the worse things i found. lol.
i was just wondering if anyone else had more personal references in terms of location/hotel
thanks!

Re: hotels in south africa
try fodors.com. I always trust their recommendations. Also, it might be worth it to upgarde to an AmEx Gold or Patinum card to get the travel agent access. We originally thought about going to SA on our honeymoon and AmEx planned everything out including, hotels, airfare, tranfers etc.

Re: hotels in south africa
Spier has fantastic wines! I didn't stay there but visited the winery.
In 2000 I stayed in a time share with my ex. He was from SA and we had a car, so I felt safer being with someone who knew how SA is.
In 2003 I stayed in the Protea in Sea Point (hated it and the area!). It was a short bus trip away from Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. I wouldn't suggest going on the bus; it can be unsafe. You can walk, but again the area is unsafe.
If I were going again and weren't on a tour, I'd stay centrally located by V&A Waterfront. I would then book all day tours to be picked up from there or my hotel. To be honest, I wouldn't do things on my own.

i was looking at the sea point area, since it so close to everything. we will be renting a car, so i either see us walking or taking our car, not the bus.
you found sea point unsafe?? the reviews im reading about V&A area is that its very noisy at night and still far from the beach. any other CPT area that you could recommend? i know City Bowl is pretty touristy, so I was thinking that Sea Point is probably safer....no?
i appreciate any insights you can give! thanks!

The area was perfect!!!! You want to stay in the V&A area. I remember the breakfasts being really good too. I have since had two friends on my recommendation travel to South Africa since my trip. They stayed at other places on the waterfront that they liked as well. I loved South Africa so much we have returned to Africa again. We have been to South Africa, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Mauritius.

I don't know. I just felt safer at v&A. I may just be very paranoid after all the crime stories my ex told me, but I would never do my own thing there.
When I stayed in Seapoint there was some murder/massacre that happened in the area a week prior. I was also approached by someone walking out of my hotel on the steps, and my friend and I felt something was off, so we walked away. The guy then started yelling at us. The hotel also changed our keys one day with no explanation. I just didn't feel right in the area.
I wish I could remember the area I stayed in the first time. It was right across from the beach with a perfect view of Table Mountain, and it was really nice. The water's too cold to go swimming in, but we saw some nice sunsets. Unfortunately, I don't speak much to the ex anymore, or I'd find out, sorry. I think it was a time share of one of his colleagues.
