House Remodeling Costs
Hi all, we have decided after about two years of on and off looking at other houses that we are going to further remodel ours. We are keeping the overall size but want to remodel one smaller bathroom, remodel another bathroom and steal space from the bedroom next door, add high hats in three rooms, re-drywall two bedrooms (about 10X13 in size),re-draywall the small downstairs hallway, re-do all the interior doors about 12 doors), add two custom closets, add a door from the garage to the house and turn the garage into a mudroom. Do you think 90k is a realistic budget? Any feedback appreciated. Thanks!
Would likely be easier to move but love our location too much.

Re: House Remodeling Costs
It reall depends on what you are doing in the bathrooms - quality/custom materials, etc. Are you moving plumbing? Creating plumbing in garage for laundry hookups would be expensive if they don't exist - not sure if that's what you meant. High hats would be a few hundred for each room (like 500?)
We did 10 doors. I got quotes from 350-700 per door solid wood are more expensive. We opted not to do the closet doors in kids rooms which would have been 500 each (bifold)
Call Anthony from home rx, get an itemized quote. 516-474-7979
My gut is that is a nice budget but these things add up quickly.

I would say a reasonable budget. Definitely there will be unexpected costs however if you watch your purchases and choices, I definitely think you can get what you need. I would get a few contractor quotes as well just to comparison shop. Good luck!

Re: House Remodeling Costs
Having just gone through a major renovation, my thought is that while 90K can probably get you what you want, it really depends on the specific items you pick out - everything has a low end and a high end and we did not take this into account and went way over budget. There are always things you forget about - we focused on construction costs but didn't take into account things like painting, new "decor" items, etc. Also are you doing the work yourselves or hiring a contractor? That also comes into play because you are paying for labor.
Also - we were going to move too and looked for awhile and in the end did not want to leave our location so we renovated. It was a very long stressful process BUT now that we are done I am SO glad we did not move - we love our house and neighborhood. Good luck!

I think $90k sounds a little low, though you can cut costs if you use less expensive pieces for the bathrooms, for instance. But if I were remodeling my forever house, I probably wouldn't be cutting corners. If you're doing all the drywall, I assume you are also repainting? That's another $5k at least, depending on the size of your house.

I think it can all be done on 90k but it will depend on what you are looking to do in the bathrooms. You could spend 8k on a bathroom or you could spend 30k its all depends on materials and how custom you choose to make your bathroom.
