How big of a factor is age & the pill?

I'm turning 30 next Friday and starting to freak out about having problems TTC. I've been on the pill for 12 years also which concerns me. DH doesn't want kids for another 3 years and infertility is a big concern for me. Of course yesterday everyone was questioning me about a baby and reminding me of how old I'm getting. Is it going to be more difficult to TTC at 33?

TIA,
Kelly

I am 36 and had been on the pill for 15 years before TTC. I went off the pill and I got my period 34 days later. Every cycle since then has been 28 days (with the exception of one or two at 29 or 30). The pill does not have an effect on your fertility. The pill may mask problems you may have, but it does not render a person infertile. Many women learned they had issues after they went off the pill but they had nothing to do with being on it. My reasons for note being able to get PG are not related to the pill either.

The bottom line is this, as much as it s u c k s, it does get harder as you get older. A woman is born with a certain amount of eggs and the older you get, the less eggs you have left. I was told that at 36, I stand only a 10% chance of conception with each cycle (with the optimum conditions) and it could take up to one year to conceive.

For me I had no choice. I got married at older at 35 and wouldnt have a child unless I was married. This is the hand I was dealt and I am dealing with it. You have to do what is right for you. Having a child when two people are not on the same page may not always be a good thing.

As far as people reminding you about how old you are, tell them to MYOB.

Age plays more of a role in having problems conceiving than the number of years of being on the pill.

I was on the pill for about 8 years, but had been off for a couple years due to other health issues.

I was 33 when I became pregnant, and had no trouble conceiving. Your fertility does statistically go down as you get older, but everyone is different and I think the time frame you suggest is well within the healthy norm.

I am in the same boat; got married later, so here I am, 35 years old, still TTC. People should just keep their mouths shut about reminding you of age - as if we're from another planet and don't know that we are in our thirties.

I too got married later (36) & was on the pill for 10 years. We got pregnant the 2nd month trying...no issues. Obviously every person is different. Like Goldi said, the pill can mask a problem that you may not know about otherwise (while you're on it).
