Re: How can I dispose of a empty propane tank?
Town of Islip says you can dispose of BBQ grills on Bulk Days (Wednesdays). No details about the tanks, but I'm guessing that if they mention BBQ grills, they have to expect the tanks as well....
ETA: Found another link for TofI: Town of Islip Hazardous Waste disposal
Islip, NY - Islip Town Supervisor Phil Nolan has announced an agreement that will lead to an increase in the safe disposal of hazardous waste by allowing Islip Town residents to drop-off their household hazardous waste at the Town’s multi-purpose waste facility each week. Prior to the plan, resident’s only opportunity to dispose of household hazardous waste was during the Town’s twice-a-year ‘Stop Throwing Out Pollutants (STOP) Day’. “This plan will be more convenient, and because of that I am convinced it will increase the amount of hazardous waste that is disposed of properly. Beginning this Spring, once the necessary permits are in place, Islip Town residents can drop-off their hazardous waste 52 times per year instead of just twice a year during STOP Days in September and April,” said Supervisor Nolan, adding that his long-term goal is to create a permanent household hazardous waste storage system. This year’s Spring STOP Day will be held on Saturday, April 12 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Supervisor Nolan will continue to host two Town-wide STOP Days, even after the plan to create a permanent household hazardous waste storage facility has been implemented. Hazardous waste that will be collected during this year’s STOP Day includes: aerosol cans, air conditioning refrigerants, anti-freeze, automotive fluids, bug and rodent killers, chemistry kits, drain cleaners, deodorizers, driveway sealant, e-waste, fertilizers with herbicides, fluorescent bulbs, gasoline, household batteries, laundry products, medicines, oil-based paint, oven cleaners, paint thinner, pet cleaners, photographic chemicals, polish and wood preservatives, propane tanks (empty), upholstery cleaners, spot removers, thermometers, thermostats, unused flammable liquids, used motor oil, weed killers. Residents will be notified when the program begins, and may contact the Town of Islip Department of Environmental Control at (631) 224-5640 with questions or concerns.
