How Can I Help?
I've been watching the news about the killing of George Floyd and I feel like I should get involved somehow. I must admit that I don't want to go to an actual protest, but are there other things we can do? Write to our elected officials? What else?
Yes, I am a privileged, white, middle-aged woman who has never had to deal with things that black people deal with every day. But, I feel like if we're not part of the solution, then we're part of the problem. But, what's the best way to help?

Don’t be silent. Stand up for people and call out those who are doing something wrong. Vote. Email your constituents. Don’t be snooty about having a homeless shelter or group home in your neighborhood. Support black businesses. There is more but this just off the top of my head...

Honestly. The easiest way is to make changes to yourself and don’t stay quiet. When you hear someone say something that’s racist speak up. When you see something speak up. We can’t remain silent because we don’t want to upset people. We need to make the change.

This is a great list. Very informative. I'm very surprised by the list of companies that use prison labor.

How Can I Help?
Maybe I'm just cranky right now but seeing all my white friends posting on FB is really starting to irritate me - changing their profile photo to have the BLM ring around them, talking about how they're an ally, and now BlackOutTuesday. For some reason, it's starting to feel more about "look at me and how woke I am". Instead of just making changes (like the article posted above) - calling racism out if you see it in person, etc. (I'm also white, btw.)

I know what you mean. Some people really do mean well, and want to focus on the issues, but they can be clumsy about getting out of their own way. They do mean well, and plan to be a force for good.
Others simply cannot imagine anything that isn't, first and foremost, about them. They are virtue aignaling. "Unlike everyone around ME, I have NEVER seen color...."....
It's painful.

it's called performative allyship and if you know they are not truly dismantling racism you should call them out. Some maybe don't know, some definitely do. Silence is violence.

That's exactly right. That is easier to do in person than online. Especially when you're dealing with a bunch of anonymous trolls and bullies to begin with and it's unclear who's for real and who's worth trying to get through to, if anyone.

I think most my friends feel like they mean it and I've never seen them actually be racist - so I can't really call them out on anything specific. But if one of my conservative friends post it, then I'll definitely say something.

Wait I'm confused. Being conservative means that you are racist? I know plenty of conservative people that are not racists.

*sigh* that's not what I meant - but my specific conservative friends are. By now, I've mostly unfriended people that are vocally conservative b/c they're always talking about pro-life, all lives matter, etc. The ones that are left are mostly people that I can't unfriend.
I certainly didn't mean that *ALL* conservatives are racist or any other derogatory idea. Just *my* conservative friends.

Yes, it just seems like everyone wants to jump on the trendy bandwagon. Supporting legislation like this would be better than this social media posturing.

I don't think you need to define racism. I think you have to define conservatism. Libertarianism is a form of conservatism but I would hardly classify any libertarians that I know as racist. I just really dislike sweeping generalizations. Not everyone who holds conservative beliefs is a racist. But I am not going to engage in this because undoubtedly anything I say will be twisted to portray me as some right wing conservative racist, which I can assure you, I am not.

This is a great list! Thanks for posting.
I don't think being conservative automatically makes someone racist just like I don't think being a liberal automatically makes someone non-racist. Racists come in all forms.

Re: How Can I Help?
I have been speaking to my local assemblyman since my unemployment issues. And have since been talking to him about what he plans to do to help the issue. I told him the police need to be screened better, there needs to be a 1 strike system in place. 1 strike - investigated by internal affairs and if it holds true (whatever it may be) they are OUT. Pulled off the street while investigation happens as well. He didn’t disagree so that was good. I think it starts small. It starts with us, our local officials and they can get together and try to make real change going up the ladder.
In my heart I know there is more good then bad. Just that the bad is so so bad and that’s all you ever hear about.

How Can I Help?
Its hard to define a racist because people who don't think they are racist are in fact acting in ways that perpetuate continued systemic and institutional racism. From housing discrimination to inequalities in education - it all contributes to a divided society which is terrible.
Posting a black square on instagram is performative and does nothing to help anyone.

Unfortunately in a setting like this it's not really condusive to an honest conversation because my words are twisted all the time. But there are resources that dig deeper into this issue of how conservative politics and systemic racism are intertwined.
As for defining racism, the definition exists. It depends on whether or not people believe it. And my experience is a lot of people don't. But there's been too many patched cracks in the foundations and now the house is falling apart, that's how I'm seeing this unfold.

Because the U.S. political system and political ideology is archaic and decrepit. Instead of focusing on issues like healthcare, education, infrastructure, foreign policy, which get swept under the rug - here we are in the 21st century still fighting to have black people viewed as humans, women viewed as humans, LGBT viewed as humans - civil rights issues that should have been resolved 100 years ago and should not ever be part of POLITICS. Oppressing segments of the population should never be up for debate. It should never have been a political matter to begin with. Hate should not be a political ideology.
There are places in this country where mixed race families still can't live in peace. This country refuses to evolve its low level of thinking.
