How can you be mad at your 6yo DD when....
DD is 6, and she goes to bed between 8 and 8:30. A few weeks ago, we would tuck DS in a little later, and find her light on, because she's reading a book. She really needs her sleep, though, so we turned off her overhead light off with the pull-chain, so she can't turn the light back on herself. She found a flashlight.... OK, we took that away. The other night, I noticed one of our hallway nightlights/emergency lights wasn't in the outlet (the kind that turns into a flashlight when the power goes out), but I didn't think much about it. It was missing again tonight, so I open DD's door, and she's reading a book by the light of the nightlight!
So, the dilemma is.... she really needs her sleep (she is NOT a morning person AT ALL...), but she's staying up late to read books that are above her 1st grade level, so I can't really scold her.......

Won't work. Whether we put her to bed at 7:30 or 9:30, she never wants to go to sleep. She'll read until 11:00 if we let her, no matter when we turn her lights off.

My DS used to do this! Unfortunately, we never really figured out how to make him NOT read.... and frankly, didn't really want to. My big issue was that he was going to ruin his eyes reading like that.
Good luck! Isn't it great having a kid read WAY above their grade level? (That was sarcastic... although I do realize how lucky I am that this is what I have to complain about). Now at age 11, our big issue with him is finding something on his ability level that doesn't have inappropriate content!

I scold & then chuckle to myself because I did the same exact thing.

Why not put her to bed earlier and call is "reading time". This way there no negative connotation associated with reading kwim. When time is up...come in, turn off the light and TAKE THE BOOK WITH YOU ;)

She has two bookcases in her room. She can also go to the library, which is floor-to-ceiling bookcases, in the room right next to hers, and get a book. Our house is filled with books. She has designated reading time on her own, then DW goes in her room and reads with her. I'm not looking to "fix" the problem, per-se, since I love the fact that she loves books so much. I just need to find a way to make sure she gets enough sleep each night, but not scold her for reading. Last night, I just went into her room and as soon as I opened the door, she put the book down, and I took the nite-lite, but I didn't say a word. I might let her "get away with" reading for a while, then just take the light away before it gets too late at night.

I read an article that said that reading in low light won't harm anyone's eyes. It may give some people a headache, but you can't cause any eye damage with low levels of light while reading.

Personally, I would let her stay up. #1 for all learning is reading. The fact that she loves to read gives her a huge advantage.
I think her sleep will figure itself out. She'll read herself to sleep.

What if you put her to bed at say 8 and then give her a timer and when it goes off she puts the books away.

Ditto.
I did the same as a child.

This didn't work for me. It was impossible to get them up in the morning for school. I had to confiscate flashlights.

I used to do this - under the blanket with a flashlight.
No idea how to get her to stop.

I agree. DS is 6 and loves to read on his bed. Sometimes he goes to sleep one hour later than his normal time, because he is reading. He sleeps in a bunk bed, so it is difficult for me to see what he is doing up there. In the morning is very difficult to wake him up, but the last two nights he has been so tired that has been going to sleep at 8:30
