I grew up across the street from the train tracks. The house across from us had it in their backyards. Honestly, I didn't mind it at all and never even noticed the sound. Now, when I go back to visit my parents, I notice it but living there, never.
The actually station was about 2 blocks away and it was so conveinent. I loved it. Parking there is a nightmare so it was always so nice to walk there and back. I miss that.
Same- I also loved living on a dead end.

the block behind us has the railroad right in their yard.... that's way too close. I can hear thehorn when it passes but not as loud and with this train line it only passes once an hour

I think it depends if it's a line that they use the horn or not. With the horn, I wouldn't consider anything less than .5 m away.

My parents live across the street from the railroad and they said they never hear it. I don't either when I am over there.

I live about 5 blocks from the train station and I've pretty much tuned out the whistles at this point. It never really bothered me though.
