How concerned are you about the oil spill?

I listen to NPR every morning and afternoon and the details of this spill are absolutely sickening. BP has admitted they are not equipped to handle a disaster of this magnitude. Do you believe BP should be nationalized or taken over by the government until they can control this spill? I absolutely do!

the whole thing sickens me.... I can't understand how the government allowed them to drill or whatever and they had no plan if something like this was ever to happen

now it just seems like they are winging it

is anyone boycotting BP?

It's disgusting and very upsetting. And since no other oil company has volunteered a solution, it seems that all of them were in the same position and just hoping nothing like this would happen. It's mind boggling that they are up to attempt #8 and have turned to asking James Cameron for his opinion since he filmed underwater using robots. Once I heard that I knew there was no hope.

I don't see how the Feds can take them over, aren't they a foreign company?

It's the biggest disaster anyone has ever seen.

There are some plans being worked on to build a barrier island to protect the coast.

I wish there were trained people to help save some of the wildlife. I fear that Louisana will never be the same.

I am - I needed gas the other day, closest station was BP but I just couldn't do it.

Then I heard on the news a day later that the individual BP stations have nothing to do with 'corporate' BP; but I don't believe it. I can't see how 'corporate BP' doesnt get a kickback from the local stations.

Re: How concerned are you about the oil spill?

the oil companies don't care they will make their money back, they don't care about the affects just care about money most if not all the companies are overseas just have drilling here and some minor operations here.

i do not think gov't should take over any companies, gov't can even control what they have on their plate now. What needs to happen is a call to all rigs to be inspected NOW - required to be fixed or be fined or loose drilling rights, all engineers with any experience in this to start helping out especially engineers who are gov't/state employed. Slow down drilling for oil, speeding up research in alternative energies that are green and affective so that we can slow the need for oil. F the oil companies/industry. Stop allowing lobbyist to enter our gov't buildings, to peer pressure and dangle carrots in front of our elective officials that constantly bow down to them.

If we slow down drilling here in the US that doesn't mean we up buying oil from other countries, it means getting to the point of not needing it at all.

Re: How concerned are you about the oil spill?

I just can't believe that oil rigs are set up without an emergency shut off at the base, or at least a pipeline diversion.
To rely on a single pipe coming up from the ocean floor is downright stupid.

Crimp the pipe to at least stem the flow of oil, then try to cap it.

I don't usually gas up at BP, but to boycott them is not going to do anything for BP corporate. The stations are independently owned and it is the individual owners that are being penalized.

Re: How concerned are you about the oil spill?

I am BEYOND BEYOND BEYOND disgusted by this!!!

I also see the signs of them trying to cover their asses now. For the first month or so they were acting like "it was no big deal" and the effects were minimal.... this even further nausiated me!!

This is something that's going to come and bite us on our asses for YEARS AND YEARS to come!!! It's an actualy travesty and a complete disaster!!! From the fact that they can't stop it to the fact that they had NO safety net in place should this situation arise (completely ignored even putting one in place). It's COMPLETE negligence and I really hope this company doesn't dodge any bullets on being held accountable.

I also SERIOUSLY hope and pray that something is learned from this catastrophy and rules and regulations are put into place to ensure that this NEVER EVER EVER happens again.

I also firmly belive that we should be using SOLAR ENERGY a whole lot more.... instead of relying on oil for things and depleating all the worlds natural resources for things (amongst fighting with other countries over oil, etc. and I feel like corporations run America)... we should instead use what's given natrually to us and is free. I see a definite effort in environmental awareness increasing, however I feel it's not even enough at this point and MAJOR changes need to be made if we don't want this planet to go to COMPLETE sh!t. I don't see why houses and cars, etc can't run on solar energy for the most part and perhaps a back up battery or other back up method.

I hear this morning that the oil is reaching states upwards of Florida! Soon we will see it in NY if they can't get a handle on it until AUGUST!!!!

Now I'm all riled up!!! I need to relax. breathe. haha!!

Sorry for that rant. But I just get sooo passionate about this stuff!!!

I am extremely concerned and saddened. I can't even imagine how long it is going to take our eco system to recover from this sort of catastrophe.

I just cannot fathom that with all of these smart people in the world that we cannot find a solution...........

MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY!!!! There is NO NEED for oil like this!! There ARE alternative ways to go about it!! Problem with that is the big rig oil company heads will lose money and that's all they care about!! DOLLAR SIGNS!!! You are 10000000% correct!!! Everything you said seriously made me almost jump out of my seat!!!! It's the same deal with the electric car!!! UGH!! This country can seriously infuriate me sometimes. I think we seriously need to start heading in a new "greener, earth friendly" direction or we are headed for some serious serious irrevocable problems in the future!!!!

Oh and part of the problem with the gov't is that they are practically run by these A hole companies that are just out for money. But that's a whole other segment!! haha!!! SERIOUSLY how sad is it that we have this national travesty going on an our gov't isn't even equipt to handle it because there are soooo many other issues going on right now with our Nation???

Don't all these A holes seem to get a kick back in one way or another??

I agree.. I don't see how they don't get ANY sort of kick back.

Re: How concerned are you about the oil spill?

OK I just read that article (ther first one) and it seems as though having the gov't take over would be beneficial for a few reasons, all of which are noted in the article.

but this being the one I mainly think is important.... and I touched on it in one of my earlier posts...
quoted from article: "We are not getting the truth from BP. BP has continuously and dramatically understated size of gusher. In the last few days, BP chief Tony Hayward has tried to refute reports from scientists that vast amounts of oil from the spill are spreading underwater. Hayward says BP's sampling shows "no evidence" oil is massing and spreading underwater across the Gulf. Yet scientists from the University of South Florida, University of Georgia, University of Southern Mississippi and other institutions say they've detected vast amounts of underwater oil, including an area roughly 50 miles from the spill site and as deep as 400 feet. Government must be clearly in charge of getting all the facts, not waiting for what BP decides to disclose and when."
I FIRMLY believe that they are underrating it to use and that surely makes for even larger problems in the future. You can't fix something when you can't grasp the seriousness or massive problematic effect of it.

I just wish I had more faith in our gov't.

ITA. Open this up to every scientist, ecologist etc. take new ideas and analyze their effectiveness. Also what kind of multi billion dollar company doesn't have a disaster plan?

No gov't takeover. BP should be shut down. Forever.

I am so disgusted. And heartbroken when I think about how wildlife and people are being affected. In fact, I'm not even following the converage because it upsets me too much.

I really cannot compute how I feel about this...disgusted, saddened, totally worried for our future....

I don't think there is a way to quantify what this has TRULY done to the oceans and the ecosystem. and I certainly don't believe we would ever be allowed to know about it.

I feel so disgusted by our society to be completely honest.

Re: How concerned are you about the oil spill?

i worked for a marine transportation company that carries oil on barges - and they had a few spills while i worked there. there was 1 spill from a tank barge that was pretty large (and it only made local news in the gulf)...i actually worked in the insurance and claims dept so i dealt with oil spills first hand and i can't even fathom how bad this is...you wouldn't believe the amount of people, energy and money that goes into cleaning a spill from a tank barge -something of this magnitude i can't even imagine...it's bad, really bad Chat Icon
