How did you choose your pets name?

DH and I want to get a puppy but are still fighting over names. How did you come about choosing your dog/cats name?

We knew that we didnt want a 'human' name for our kitty, and all we really knew about her before we got her was her color, which is black.

So we thought of black things and common black cat names. When we thought of black we thought of the night, and of the moon; and Luna is the ancient Roman goddess of the moon.

When we got Misty we were adopting her from previous owners. Her name was Roxy which we knew we didn't want to keep but we had to come up with something that sounded similar. Since Weimarenars are called Grey Ghosts we came up with Misty....

ETA: Espresso was going to be named Diego from Ice Age, but when we got him home he was such a crazy kitten that DH was like "We should call him Espresso cuz he's black and acts like he just drank a cup of espresso" and it stuck.

We named her after the state we got her from Jersey. We had so many debates about names and then as we were driving it just came to DH & I loved it.

My favorite book's main character (Scout from To Kill a Mockingbird).

DH thinks it is because we were talking about Boy and Girl Scouts the night our previous dog, Ebony, passed away - which is another reason. And because we hope he is adverturous!!

Ebony was named because he was black - and I was living in Spain and wanted a name that was not common there. Little did I know I would move back here and find that every other black lab was named Ebony!!

The name usually just comes to you once you pick your pup.

I read that 2-syllable names are best - they don't confuse it with commands (sit, come, stay, no).

we came up with a bunch of names one night- some half kidding... then I said how about "Mocha", he said it was too girly...we have a male dog.
So, he said "Mocho"---in Spanish it means Booger--- we came up with Boogie- LOL... then when we met him- he was such a squirmer... so we equated Boogie- with dancing- and "squirming" I guess...and it stuck!

Austin Powers Goldmember was in the theatres and we just LOVE the Austin Powers movies...hence the name Austin!

I wish I could one day name my child Austin, b/c I really do love that name now, but that would be weird.

I have had an easier time naming my baby than I had naming my dogs.

2 of them came with names already, but the others what we did was have them in the house for a couple of days & found their personalities. Py xie had this big long complex kennel name, so I just shortened it, like I did with Fascinus (who we call frank). Bruno just acted like a little tough guy & took over the house the second he walked through the door...all whopping 1 1/2 pounds of him. Loki was the hardest to name since he was so sweet looking and has an adorable face, but when we weren't looking he was the devil. Since Loki is the god of mischief and destruction, it just fit.

Denver was named after John Denver, who sang our wedding song. Holden is named after one of my fav literary characters, Holden from "Catcher in the Rye"

I named my first cat Gunnar because I was 15, it was 1990 and I liked the group Nelson. One of the brothers in the group was named Gunnar, so I stole it.

We named our second cat Scout becasue I love the book To Kill a Mockingbird and Scout was an adorable character just like my Scout!

Both our dogs have "people" names....Jessi's we picked out of a hat...and Morgan...well I looked at a bottle of Capt Morgans and was like Morgan is a cute name..

My golden retriever is JD or Jack Daniels... my late husband and i fought so much over the name... but when we finally got him someone was like he has the coloring of jack daniels and well, it stuck.... however when he was a puppy people though that JD stood for jumper and digger since he created a mind field out of my parents yard and he loved jumping on people...
my black lab is joes... his name is ranger... named after his favorite team...

My dad named "AUTO" ...long story short...he gets into the trunk of my dad car and would not come out.

And "Oliver" I named him when DH and I rescued him beacause I think Oli is a cute nickname.

We've always given our pets human names.

Roxie was named after my favorite book at the time (Superfudge-I was 9)

Phoebe was after friends (also had Monica and Rachel who turned out to be a Ross)

Charlotte after Charlotte York!

I wanted an all american name that could be a boy or a girls name and Casey just came to mind!

Lucy is named after a Beatle's song

I pulled out all my CD's with "girl names" either in the group name or song title and went from there. I've always been a Beatle fan so it wasn't too hard to decide.

A week went by and we still couldn't think of a name.... Finally someone said what about Rudolph cause we got him right before christmas. So I picked Rudy...

my cat's name "Saffy" i named afer a character on AbFab.
his (we l;ater foudn out he was a boy) full name is Saffron Sweetie Darling because the mom is always calling Saffy that. But we call him Saf or Saffy.

my minpins name we wanted to name after a Pearl Jam song.... we thought of Jeremy, & Dirty Frank but later settled on the song Lukin (it goes "i'm going to Lukin's, i've got a spot at Lukins". his full name is Lukin Von Hamburg because he is a german breed and i wanted to honor that. i later found out the pearl jam song is named after the drummer of the band Mudhoney.

my chihuahua we had a hard time naming. my god, it took forever. i had a long list and everything i liked DH vetoed. the n while i was making the list a commercial came on tv fro Disneyworld where a girl catches a firefly and asks if its Tinkerbell. i said "thats a cute name" and dh actually finally agreed. so that was it. her full name is Tinkerbell Madonna Blu. Madonna being after the singer and the name i really wanted for her, and tehn Blu b/c she had beautiful blue eyes when she was a puppy.

my chinese crested came with the name Maggie. its lame and sooo common i didnt want to keep it. i was always watching tv at niht and thats when i was tryint o think of names for her. Dharma & Greg always happened to be on at the time and i ended up really liking her name, so i decided in that. her full name is Dharma Margorate Dior... Margorate because "Maggie" is short for margorate and i wanted to honor her first name.... and then Dior just because its fancy.

We have two. Our first dog is a Chow/Shepard/Collie mix. He is fluffy and caramel colored. His name is Caden. My DH thought of it and now we know a couple of kids named this!

My second dog is champ. He is a brindle pit mix. His full name is the The Undisputed Champion because when we first got him he would box with Caden. It was very cute.

We were driving home with Cooper trying to figure out a name... we were going thru them all! Finally I said Cooper because FH grew up on Cooper Ave upstate in Albany. So I said we should name him that so it's like you have a little slice of home right here on LI.
