How did you decide when to transition them to a big kid bed or toddler bed?
We're at 20 mos old now and I've begun wondering. There's no second baby to worry about so there's no necessity for getting her out of the crib. So how do you know when it's time? I've heard some people say you keep them in the crib as long as possible til they try to climb out then that's when you know but is this the consensus? I feel like others on here move them much earlier. Is that just b/c of baby #2?

We moved because of baby #2, or else he would have stayed in much longer. In fact, since Lauren is probably our last, I will be keeping her in her crib as long as I can. If she starts climbing out, then yes, i will transition.

My oldest is 21 months and i've been pondering this too.
I'm pretty sure we're keeping her in the crib until i absolutely have to convert it to toddler bed. She def still needs the security of the 4 sides of the crib, she flops around all night long.
I don't want to rush her to grow up plus she shares a room with her little sister, i don't need her running around in there while her baby sister is trying to sleep.

I plan on keeping DS in the crib until he tries to climb out, unless he never tries

We moved them at 2 years and 4 months because they were putting thier entire leg over the side and we felt that a fall was imminent. It was a rough transition, and they don't nap like they used to, but they are still put in thier room at thier nap time. The issues we were having were based on having two though, and them keeping each other up.

DD turned 2 in December, she's doing fine in her crib, so until she tries to climb out, the crib is where she stays.

It just got to be too cumbersome to put her in and pick her up out of, her crib

That's what I thought too (as long as possible til they try to climb out) but I was just recently speaking with my cousin who said she read you have to do it before that b/c once they have that rebelious urge to climb the bed will be difficult to transition and dangerous b/c they will climb out of it repeatedly whereas b4 they have that urge they will be easier to lay down and stay down We'll see. Still undecided but leaning towards doing it soon.

my DD was throwing herself out of the crib in fits of anger....that was the first clue.
She wasn't sleeping well and she was up crying and jumping out so we figured what do we have to lose? She absolutely loves it!!! I think the independence was a good thing for her and it really helped our sleeping situation.

Jared climbed up and fell out of his crib. That night daddy came home with a mattress for him. (It's helpful that he works for Sleepys)

Re: How did you decide when to transition them to a big kid bed or toddler bed?
Andrew is 20 months and I am in the process of changing over his room now from teddy bears to fire trucks. When I am done decorating, I will bring in his fire truck toddler bed. He will probably be 2 by then. I am taking it slow. I still have to re paint and put up the new border.
