How do I teach them to share?

Right now they are in the phase of grabbing everything out of each other's hands and well Claire reacts as if someone stabbed her. She has a complete and utter melt-down. Since they are sitting up and "playing" more in the pack & play she cries every few minutes! HELP!

I am no help at all as we are still in that phase.

It's usually DS who is the victim. It happens about 10 times a day. Today he was standing and holding onto the "Singing Stage" looking in the mirror at his handsome self, babbling and having a grand old time when DD crawls clear across the room to where he is. She then stands up and SWATS him away so he begins to fall.

Yes, I saw it and I swear it happens so fast that you can't always get there in time.

Same thing with picture booksChat Icon

I always say, "Now, your brother/sister was looking at/playing with that... let's share" I'm not sure if they understand but I'm hoping some day it will sink in.

I think by the summer they might be old enough for "mini time outs " like my BF used.

I wish I was of help too, we are having the same thing. They grab things from each other and the one who usually tantrums is Matthew and he is the bigger one, and he just cries and looks at me.

I don't think that phase ever goes away.

We are going through this too. DS always steals from DD and she gets so upset. Usually we'll tell him to wait his turn, and he just stares at her crying and usually she just gives it to him.

I make an effort to watch when it happens and if one of them takes it from the other i grab it out of their hands and give it back to who had it first.

Sometimes the one who has it first will just give it up, i don't bother then.

But when the two of them are screaming and one is trying to take it away I make sure that the one who had it first plays with it.

Not sure if it works, but I think it is fair.

I take away the item they are fighting over if they can't work it out. I try to get them to share and switch what they have often so they get used to it, but they are abit older and you can reason with them a bit more then when they are younger. Only a bit more though, at times you can't reason with them, so the toy goes into time out.
