How do you decide who to vote for? (Local elections)
I tend to "generally" agree with one party more than the other but really do want to be informed and make my choices for individual people vs just voting straight across the board for one party. However I find it very difficult to make a decision based on actual facts. I've tried to do some research but I feel like you can't really believe most of what's out there. How do you decide who to vote for? Where can you go for truely unbiased information?

I vote on issues. I think that's the best way to go so you don't get caught up in BS (which happens in every party)
Voting on issues is hard for me because while I'm so liberal on social issues, I'm very much republican/right on issues when it comes to military, immigration and foreign affairs.
But then I have to decide what issues are more important to me and then vote for whoever aligns with them the most.
I have watched every debate so far.
Il say this: The fact that Sanders and Trump both aren't able to be bought ... Is an aspect that's very appealing to me.

There's no real right or wrong. You either believe and identify with the majority of a political party or candidate enough to feel secure in voting for them based on the changes you want that candidate to enact in office. I think it's very instinctual.

How do you decide who to vote for?
Was referring more to the local elections happening today, not really the presidential race.

I usually vote for whoever repulses me the least.

If I am happy with the way things are - I typically vote for the incumbents. If I feel there is a need for change, I vote for the challengers...
I also read up on the issues a bit and ask DH for an overall synopsis (he's really into this while I am not).
This was a hard election this year for town council. I was decided on who I was voting for for supervisor but, not so much so when it came to councilmen...

I try to pay close attention to issues that are important to me. I also get the Newsday voters guide. This year there was one particular issue in my town that swayed my vote away from the incumbents.

Re: How do you decide who to vote for? (Local elections)
I'm pretty much as liberal as it goes SOCIALLY. And ONLY socially.
Like eatmyveggies, I am very much conservative in EVERY other aspect (with the exception of education - I'm in between there)
I have YET to meet a candidate that fits who I am. I don't identify with ANY of them.
How is that possible?! Why, in this day and age, isn't there a candidate out there who fits the profile of a progressive, socially liberal republican!? I left the political world because I could not STAND the pandering that politicians do for money and interest groups. I despise that at this point in the game, Republicans want to "look" as conservative as possible to gain the bible belt vote. Therefore their social stances border on appalling to me.
Because of this, I can't in good conscience vote for ANY of them. Republican or Democrat. It's beyond frustrating to me.
ETA: Sorry for my tirade. I know the OP was referring to the local elections, but I am speaking in general terms here...

You aren't alone. However, I consider social issues (i.e. women's rights) to be most important. I really wish the republican party was not held captive by the conservative right because I find that I cannot back a conservative candidate.
