How do you encourage good behavior and listening with your 3-5 year old?
DS is 4yrs and his listening skills have taken a nose dive. I just had a parent teacher conference yesterday and following directions was certainly not his strong suit according to his teacher and I have noticed it at home more recently.
How do you encourage listening and following directions? How do you disciple when they don't?
Any advice is welcome!

Personally and professionally I use 1-2-3 Magic. You need To follow it to a T but it is easy to implement and effective.

Re: How do you encourage good behavior and listening with your 3-5 year old?
I think it depends on the child. For my 5 year old, we started a weekly reward chart for good behavior. He does better with positive reinforcement versus discipline. I started this when he turned 4 and listed out four things with easy to understand pictures next to it (because he obviously couldn't read at the time). I made the chart myself in Microsoft Word and actually had "Listen to Parents and Teachers" as an item. It worked very well.

Haven't read this book in awhile but love it Adele Faber
I also think this is a good resource Love and Logic
We use this at my school and suggest it to parents as well.

The parenting with love and logic book has great ideas.
My children don't listen. I'm looking for ideas, just like the 185 people who viewed this post (notice 4 answered)

Re: How do you encourage good behavior and listening with your 3-5 year old?
I do my best to stay calm and go to their level and say softly what I need done . They respond best when I talk calmly . I used to be a yelling mom and that just didn't work for anyone . If they speak to me disrespectfully I tell them my ears can't understand when they speak that way . good luck . I take away tv and I pad time when they don't behave favorably .

No joke!
Thanks so much for the tips and I am definitely going to look into these books. I am most definitely a short fuse "yelling mom" and I really want to change that. And clearly its not effective.

I agree with 1-2-3 magic. Although I need to get back on track with my three, when I was using this method it worked wonders for us. But like Christina said, you have to follow it to a T.

this is what i do with my 5 year old, too.... its hard sometimes... but it definitely works!! i get down to his level, or sometimes i even pick him up and hold him. and talk calmly to him--- explain why what he was doing is wrong, and what i want him to do instead.... so many times not listening/acting out is a cry for attention. so by getting on their level, or holding them and talking to them calmly, they feel like they're getting the attention they want so it feeds that need. not always easy to stay calm, though!! HAHA good luck!!!

LOL Yes! I totally put all the recommended books on my amazon wishlist. My kids listen when it is convenient for them.
