How do you get your school age kids to focus on school work?
My son can create a toy out of anything. A pencil is a car, rocket, robot. He creates imaginative stories in his head. He will sit and do his math quite quickly because he loves math. But getting him to write stories or sentences is like pulling teeth. He does not want to do it. Eventually he will, but how can I get him to just sit and focus to do the work? I know that he is quite capable and smart, but he needs help to focus on the task at hand.

Do you have a set time for homework? How do you get it? Daily or weekly packets? Maybe it would help if you had a set time and set a timer for 20 minutes and in those 20 minutes he has to focus 100% on his work.

Re: How do you get your school age kids to focus on school work?
Last year my son's teacher suggested bribery
I told her normally we have a rule no video games or ipad usage on school days.
She said to set a timer for however long I felt was a reasonable amount of time to get his homework done by. If he was done by the time the timer went off ( and it was done properly not just him rushing and putting anything down on the paper) to give him 15-20 minutes of ipad time (or whatever your son's currency may be)
It worked wonderfully!

Your DS sounds just like mine. He's always been soo creative and great at math. He knew his shapes, numbers and memorized letters early on, but wasn't talking as much so was in IE. He's only in kindergarten now so work isn't too long, but I do fear him losing interest when it comes to writing now. He loves making his own math sheets too and creating his own board games. Funny.

This is a great idea - Right now he's into doing his work, but I'm sure there will come a time I'll need this tactic !!

It really is! My son used to love homework too but in the 4th/5th grade it started becoming torture...for both of us. He had no motivation to just get it done. Since he couldn't play his games or ipad like he wanted he was just dragging his feet wasting time. Now a year after that suggestion I don't even need to set the timer anymore. He hustles to get it done so he can enjoy his little bit of fun time.

Re: How do you get your school age kids to focus on school work?
So the thing is when he is seated the work can be done quickly by him. He just wants to get up or starts to daydream if I am not sitting right next to him. I would like for him to be able to sit and do it while I am in the same room but I would like to be able to do the dishes or start making dinner, and then to be called over if he has a question. I don't want to have to repeatedly say sit down and focus like I have to 30 million times. He is in second grade. Is that asking too much?

I do something similar to this. I know a lot of parents have a strict "no screen-time" rule but I find with my kids I need to dangle a carrot if I want them to get their work done. And it works, because if they do a half-ass job, they are not getting to go on the iPad or play video games. But if they do their work well I feel like they deserve a little break.
