How do you hang pictures, etc on a sheetrock wall?
Does anything special need to be used to hang a picture on a sheetrock wall?

Wall anchors. If you nail into sheet rock without anchoring it the nail will just fall out. You can't just nail into sheetrock, there is nothing securing the nail. Hammer wall anchors in and then use screws. It will be very secure on the wall.

when my husband did our sheetrock i had him put an extra wood brace across at a height where i felt we would hang pictures. you can nail into sheetrock if you find the studs and nail by where there is a stud (wood beam)

Depends on what you are hanging. If it's 8x10 photos, you can just use a simple nail and hook. If it's a painting, you'd want a wall anchor and screw. If it's a sculpture, you'll want to attach to wood (stud or bracing).
I've done all of the above, depending on the weight.
