How do you keep your toddler entertained in the car?
Nate used to be OK when we were in the car. Now we are trying to wean him off the paci and now he's just restless in the car, sometimes unbearable. A few weeks ago it was chewing on the tires on his cars, now he takes his shoes and socks off every time he get in the car. I tried a few books, singing with him, he's OK for 15 min or so but then he just asks for his paci.
So how do you keep your toddler entertained?

I give him a bag of teddy grahams and some juice. He doesn't give me problems in the car. We usually look for trucks and I point things out to him.

Re: How do you keep your toddler entertained in the car?
I don't.
After about 10mins, she basically cries the whole way.
She is getting better though. If I give her a snack, that gives us another 5 mins. If she's in a good mood, she'll sing, take off her shoes and socks, and point to things outside.
If she's in a bad mood. WHOAH.

Sing songs, count cars, talk about things, read signs.
Other than that, I just let them be bored. IMO my kids dont' get enough downtime.

Re: How do you keep your toddler entertained in the car?
I put on cds and let her pick which one she wants. We have Jack's Big Music Show, Backyardigans, Wiggles, Sesame Street. She knows the words to most of the songs now and sings along.
We "teach" Andy what noises different animals make, we point out clouds, planes, cars, etc. to Andy. Pretty much anything to keep her occupied and she feels important helping to teach him stuff.
I also have a bunch of books that I keep in my doorwell that are just for the car. She's allowed to have one at a time, and has to pass me the one she's done with before I give her a new one. Plus if she drops one I can just pass another back instead of trying to reach the floor of the backseat while driving.
I don't give any food or drinks in the car.

same here, Roman always has some snack and his sippy. If he gets restless or doesn't want them anymore I distract him by talking about something outside. He is easily redirected.

Nate has this toy and I can I secretly tell you that I HATE it. I don't think I can bring myself to bring it to the confined space of the car.
"Hold on tight", "Slow down little fella"....is now in my mind
But I do like the idea of the CDs and books. Maybe I'll take him to the book store and let him pick out some car books.

We have this in the car too. At 2.5 - he'll still play with it as we drive.
We sing lots of songs - we have about 3 cd's of his in each car.
We do lots of let's look for XYZ...trucks, blue cars, dogs, ballons, etc.
We talk about our day.
I have a bunch of books in the car as well. I also have the Leapfrog ABC radio toy in the car as well for him to play with.

Re: How do you keep your toddler entertained in the car?
Right now her favorite thing for the car is her travel magna doodle. She draws all her favorite characters over and over again. She loves it. We also have a few toys that make obnoxious noises that she loves. She is really good in the car though.

Re: How do you keep your toddler entertained in the car?
Since he is still in withdrawal from the paci - how about a big sippy cup of water? Jake is good in the car but I always give him a sippy cup of water on the way to daycare every morning. Try that along with the books.

Re: How do you keep your toddler entertained in the car?
On the way to daycare, he usually has a sippy cup of milk and a banana or fruit bar. On the way back he gets a juice box and goldfish or cheerios.
I'm gonna look for the travel magna doodle... he definitely likes to draw.
So is my kid the only one that takes his shoes and socks off?

We sing, i talk to her about our surroundings, where we are going, etc... She loves to bring her doll in the car and occasionally the sippy cup and a snack keeps her occupied.
