How do you know if it's allergies vs. a cold?
DS nose has been running a lot and he has sneezed a few times over the past couple of days.
DH gets horrible allergies this time of year----he has right now in fact.
How do you know the difference?
DS is 16 months btw.

With a cold there is sometimes a fever and the snot eventually turns green or yellow. With allergies it stays clear.

it also depends on the length, anything longer than a week or so, without getting better or worse is probably allergies.

itchy eyes are another sign of allergies
not to be controversial, but see if benedryl clears it up.

Re: How do you know if it's allergies vs. a cold?
Honestly, my whole house is dealing with this right now. We're all sneezing, watering eyes, coughing, congested, you name it. We also feel completely run down. I have NO idea if it's a cold or allergies because the news keeps saying it's worst allergy season yet with mold counts being really high. I know for me, that's what I'm SO allergic to. But I just don't know because most of the time we all are sneezing and coughing up clear mucus, but then sometimes it's not, so I have no idea. All I know is we all feel like crap I did take a claritin last night and it seemed to help a bit, but not a lot. But then again, my husband took tylenol cold and sinus and that didn't help him. I hate not knowing.

Benedryl helps with colds as well. We give it to my kids at night to help dry them up when they're really congested. This is at the recommendation of our pediatrician.

Re: How do you know if it's allergies vs. a cold?
I have no answer sorry, but I'm happy to see the question. I've been dealing with this myself. I started off buying a very cheap CVS brand allergy medicine, and it knocked me out when I took two, but when I took 1, it was of no help. So I bought Tylenol cold - it did nothing. I just bought Claritin. It's helping, but minimally. I assumed this was allergies, but DS has this now, so maybe it's a cold. I'm hoping I figure something out from this thread

Re: How do you know if it's allergies vs. a cold?
I don't know if you can give this to kids, but for those of you who are adults and suffering, Zyrtec is amazing stuff - it's the only non-rx drug that works for DH and his brother, both of whom have horrendous seasonal allergies. Zyzol (sp?) is even better, but rx. Claritin as far as I can tell anecdotally is garbage - I'm sure it works for some people but not anyone I know.

same here - our ped recommended benedryl to dry him up when he was congested and couldnt breath good. benedryl, saline drops and cool mist humidifier. i gave less than the dr recommended but didnt like how much he slept so i didnt give it to him anymore.. but my ped did recommend it to dry him up so if u do wind up using it and it works u really wont be able to tell if its allergies or a cold
