Re: How do you know when its time to switch formulas?
How old is your DC?
I was told that it takes until about 3 months for their digestive system to get mature (that it is basically under developed at birth).. this is why babies spit up, have a hard time going to the bathroom, etc...
DD was a little premature and she spit up a lot.. after every single bottle- she wasn't in any discomfort- she just spit up.. we switched her to enfamil AR and it helped.
IF your DC doesn't seem to have any discomfort but it is just a spitting up issue, maybe leave it be?

projectile..but not after every bottle just once or twice (at most) a day and he doesn't seem to be uncomfortable at all when he does it. It's usually when we are burping him

DS is 3 weeks and he doesn't seem to have any discomfort so maybe it is just his digestive system not mature yet

Re: How do you know when its time to switch formulas?
You can try waiting a bit to see how things progress. We switched DS at 3 weeks because he was having lots of trouble pooping and was really gassy. The next formula made him spit up a ton! It was all the time, after every bottle and even 1.5 hrs after a bottle. After a few days we switched to Alimentum and it made a huge difference.
See if more symptoms develop and whether he seems to be in any discomfort and then decide. If it really is projectile, as in way across your lap (or the room as my doctor said) then call your ped.

Re: How do you know when its time to switch formulas?
Most babies have immature guts and are unable totolerate a full lactose load. Although they need the lactose in their diet to keep the enzyme lactase working and to help with calcium absorption.
I find the best solution is going to gentlease. It is reduced lactose and partially hydrolyzed proteins so it not only helps with gas/fussiness but also spit up. Severe spit up requires a switch to a thickened formula such as AR. It has added rice starch that thickens in baby's belly to keep formula down.
HTH!! I love gentlease and find that it works great on most babies
