How do you know when to switch formulas?
DD has been drinking Similac Advance w/ Early Shield RTF since the hospital (was supplementing, now she is just FF) with no problems but for the past two days has been so fussy, gassy and uncomfortable. I tried the powder version and that just made matters worse.
Should I try a different brand? Has anyone used Similac Sensitive?

Re: How do you know when to switch formulas?
We had the same problems with DS around 4 weeks after using the Similac Advnace. After trying 3 other formulas we ended up on Neslte Good Start. I tried the Sensitive and it made him SO constipated, the Alimentim made him spit-up like crazy. Our ped said sometimes it helps to switch brands. The Good Start has the proteins very broken down so it's easier on their bellies. I would call your ped and see what they say

Re: How do you know when to switch formulas?
DS had been drinking Enfamil Lipil since the hospital - but only as a supplement He stopped latching and once I was only FF, he started to get VERY constipated I spoke with the dr. who said all formulas are the same and are "binding", but I really didnt believe this - I am now using Good Start - my sister used it with all 3 of her boys and never had a problem
I also was contemplating BJ's brand - It had the same ingredients and much less expensive
Now with the Good Start, he has not been constipated at all and it has been 4 days

Re: How do you know when to switch formulas?
I switched from Similiac Advanced to Similiac Sensitive at 4 weeks for many of the same reasons you listed and things have been great!!!!! I noticed the difference within 3 days, I also use mylicon in each bottle and it works wonders for us.
I did call the dr. first before I switched! Good luck

Re: How do you know when to switch formulas?
My DS started on Similac Advance at the hospital. I gave him 8 weeks on it, and he was horribly fussy and gassy.
There wasn't Similac Sensitive then, so my ped had me switch to Gentlease, which is Enfamil's version.
I'd call your ped and see what they recommend.

I would speak to your Ped. first before changing formula...I had the same problem and changed to soy (with Ped. o.k.)..and it has gotten better.

Maybe it's the bottle you're using and not the formula. Around 4-5 weeks Emerson had a similar problem but we actually changed from the Born Free bottles to the Playtex Drop Ins and the problem went away and she's been doing great since. She's been on Enfamil Lipil since a week old and she's now 4 months. Just a thought......it worked for us!
FYI - Emerson did TERRIBLE with the powder formula too until about 3 months. We had her on the ready feed until then.

Re: How do you know when to switch formulas?
We suplpement DS with formula, I started with the Similac advanced because we had samples of it, he had major problems with gas and constipation, we used it with him for about 1 week. I spoke with our ped and she suggested we switch to soy because milk allergies run in my family (she was the pediatrician for me and my 6 siblings as well as all 10 grandchildren, so she is very familiar with our family )
After we switched to the soy (Similac Isomil) the gassiness went away but he still gets consitpated sometimes, our pediatrician suggested giving him molasses in boiled water when he gets constipated, it totally does the trick!
