How do you know when your cesspool needs to be pumped?
Does everyone wait until its urgent or do you have it pumped every few years?

You shouldn't pump it unless you have a problem because you can create a bigger problem. the way we knew was we went into our crawl space and openeded the cesspool trap and then I flushed the toilet twice in a row and ran the faucet in our bathroom and it would fill up really quickly instead of flow right into the cesspool. That is when we knew it was time to get it checked out. We decided to replace ours instead of pumping because our sellers didn't do anything to the house in 20 years and I had a feeling the cesspool was original. We were redoing our downstairs where the cesspool would overflow to if there was a problem.

you'll notice sluggish flows in the showers and drains, and maybe even a back-up at your lowest point.
Nothing needs to be done unless you notice problems.
