how do you ladies with newborns deal with

night feedings??? someone told me that if you skip the diaper changes at night unless they poo that they will back to sleep quicker?? if you change them you are waking them up and therefore making it harder to go back to sleep...

thoughts?

I don't change diapers in the middle of the night unless it is necessary. It wakes him up and then he wakes up the neighbors. I don't wake up DS to feed either. He will get up on his own and let me know when he is hungry. At almost 9 weeks he is finally sleeping 5 hours straight.

I have heard this as well, though I never felt totally comfortable leaving him wet. I always changed him before the feeding, because after the feeding he would be nice and full and sleepy and then I could just lay him right down.

DD is almost 8 weeks old and has started sleeping through most of the night - 9:30 to 4am. I am nursing. When she was waking up in the middle of the night, if I was really "full" I would change her diaper to wake her up so I can feed her. It was a nightmare to get her back asleep - took 1 1/2 hours to feed her and put her back asleep. After awhile, I just didn't change her and let her sleep and pumped. I figured if she was sleeping through the night it was the same as if I didn't change her diaper.

PS - I would use lots of A&D ointment so she didn't have any diaper rash issues.

When my DD was a NB she was up every 3 hrs. for a feeding until she STTN at 8 weeks old. I always gave her a diaper first then her bottle so if she fell asleep after she ate she was clean and fresh. Aside from that, laying her down for a diaper change AFTER a bottle would almost always ensure that she puked. Chat Icon

I had never heard of this.

wow

When AJ was a newborn we always changed her with feedings. She would sleep in her feedings so changing her woke her up enough to get through the feeding. If she was full she'd sleep better. If she slept too early through her feeding she'd only wake up soon after from hunger again!

Plus she had a UTI at 8m and having to hold your child down for a cathater Chat Icon horrible. I couldn't imagine letting her sit in her pee if I could avoid it.

ETA: and when I say change for feeding I mean both BF and FF. She was BF for a few weeks and honestly it was the only way of keeping her awake! Not eyes open but at least awake enough to get her fill. Even then we'd have to rub her feet, bounce her a little or use a damp cloth on her face to keep her latched and suckling.

I change Braydon halfway through the night feeding- mostly because he always falls asleep midway though and bottle and it wakes him up and he finishes the bottle- which means he sleeps for 5 hours instead of 3

I have to change my DD to keep her awake for feedings too. I typically change her in between sides, otherwise she'll never take the other side. I don't wake her for feedings though. The doc told me that I don't have to since she's gaining weight.

Luckily, when she's full, she goes right to sleep. If she's awake, I lay her on my chest, which always settles her and then once she drifts off, I put her in her bassinet.

When DD was a NB, I learned quickly unless it was poop, I never changed her diaper overnight. She slept in the swing right next to me, which helped. When she was a little bigger, we co-slept so I could sleep while she BFed (when she is sick we still do this)

I usually change her in the middle of the feeding because she usually falls asleep after eating only a little bit. It wakes her up enough to finish the feeding, but it doesn't keep her up for a long time.

I change him before every feeding. At night he sleeps right through. I do not wake him to change him. I have a 6 week old that sleeps 7 - 8 hours a night.

If he isnt crying I am not going to disturb him. He has never pooped at night. It is always in the morning after his 1st feeding.

I am very lucky at how great a sleeper he is.

Yep..this is what I did. he wouldnt really wake fully when i changed him. I would keep everything dark and quiet, then get his bottle and we were good to go.

I do the same thing...
He wakes up at 4ish for a bottle and I change him before I feed him. He falls asleep with the bottle and I put him down with no problems.
