How do you really feel about holiday tipping? POLL
I'm torn between tipping and not tipping DS' daycare providers this year. I've never seen them since DH does the pickup and dropoff so can't tell how well they treat DS. However, I feel like they should be tipped because everyone else seems to be doing it and they are underpaid.
A part of me is also afraid that children of parents who tip will be more favored. :(
Just curious, how does everyone feel about holiday tipping in general? Feel free to remain anonymous by taking the poll.
Thanks.

I'll be honest.. I tip people like the mail carrier and the sanitation b/c I feel I HAVE to.. Do i think it's necessary.. no I don't.
Daycare teachers.. yes I feel they deserve it.

Just wondering, are daycare teachers allowed to accept tips? I know they deserve it.

Yes - I view it more as a holiday gift though than a tip.

ITA... I'd rather just give more to DS's daycare teachers. it's become his 2nd home and the teachers are like family

I actually view it as a gift and I am happy to gift these people - the mail lady, the ups man, DD's pre k teachers. I dont give any of these people gifts under duress...I am happy and they are happy and very appreciative.

Ditto! Now that you mention it, I'll feel guilty if I don't tip them - the daycare providers, that is. They do have a tough job and are so underpaid.

Re: How do you really feel about holiday tipping? POLL
I limit it to my hair dresser and DS's teachers.
ETA: My hair dresser goes out of her way for me (even gives toys to DS) and DS's teachers are with him all day. How can I not tip the people that watch my baby? They don't have an easy job at all and I'm sure they don't get paid enough.

In my daily life I tip very well. I tip my bartenders ridiculous amounts, waiters and waitresses very well, hairdresser etc. I don't tip just becuase it's Christmas. I don't see the point in that. Just like I don't tip on 4th of July or Thanksgiving.

Re: How do you really feel about holiday tipping? POLL
IMO tips are out of control. People are paid for a service and that should be the end of it. Did I give all DD's daycare teachers a gift? Yes, but I did not give them cash or a visa gift card. Did I tip the mailman? No, but I will give him a bottle of wine, because he waves hello and knows my name, and made sure to welcome me to the neighborhood when I moved in 3 years ago. The garbage collectors? No. The newspaper delivery person? No.

Re: How do you really feel about holiday tipping? POLL
I tip/give a holiday gift to: my assistant at work, another person at work who I feel went above and beyond, the staff in our apartment building, and our mailman.
I don't have a "regular" stylist, manicurist, etc who I see often enough to tip on top of what I usually do.
many I feel "obligated" to but in most cases I feel they deserve it as well. My assistant last year didn't deserve it but I gave her a holiday gift out of obligation

I tip all of the standard people; mailcarrier, garbage men, baby sitter, even UPS. I feel that I have a lot to be grateful for and I like to show my appreciation.

Re: How do you really feel about holiday tipping? POLL
I tip only when services are above what is expected. It's their line of work to do just normal service... but it's the person that goes the extra step. Like take my garbage men, they sometimes leave something just laying there, or skip my house all together... so why should I tip them?
DH on the other hand tips everyone and then some! And during the holidays its worse! We went out to dinner the other night... the waitress forgot about extra hot sauce for his wings, forgot about getting me another drink, and DH still tipped her an EXTRA 20 b/c it's the holidays! He thinks we're rich LOL
ETA: I of corse tip hair dressers and such like that... but the standard LOL. Sometimes I even use my phone to make sure I'm not going over IF they did a horrible job.

Re: How do you really feel about holiday tipping? POLL
I tip or give gifts when I can. I don't really feel obligated in any way. I do it because I like giving people gifts, whether it's the mailman or the garbage man or a teacher. I feel everyone deserves a little appreciation, ya know? As a teacher, I get so many wonderful gifts for the holidays and I know how great it makes me feel, so I look at it as paying it forward, ya know?

Re: How do you really feel about holiday tipping? POLL
exactly above about the sanitation men leaving stuff. I'm up and look out the window when they come and they just toss garbage cans which are plastic so many weeks of that they eventually crack and we get new ones. I had also one guy one time yell at me for putting something out on the wrong day or something. So I'm not happy with their service and I would tip my mail carrier but I've got 3 different ones and don't know why so It's just too much. I do take care of anyone dealing with my kids including bus drivers.

Re: How do you really feel about holiday tipping? POLL
TOTALLY OUT OF CONTROL! The mailperson who tramples across my lawn everyday and gives me other people's mail..NO, the garbagemen who leave garbage all over the street and then park on a diagonal so I can't get down the street...Uh NO!I don't know why people expect tips for Christmas for doing their jobs.

Re: How do you really feel about holiday tipping? POLL
I tip everyone who works with DS. Plain and Simple!
Yes, it's their job but I like to thank them for taking care of my boy. I want to show that I don't think they are just handling a piece of meat. I just show my appreciation!
I do not tip my mailman and garbage men. They do a crappy job!

Re: How do you really feel about holiday tipping? POLL
Holiday tipping is out of control - in fact - tipping in general has been out of control!
I think this is the only country where we are expected to tip nail salons, hair dressers, mailmen, sanitation workers, dunkin donut workers, deli workers, pizzeria workers, bakery workers etc. etc. There isn't a store ive been to recently that doesn't have a tip jar! Its just insane.
I feel like i almost have to tip some people - but not because i want too! In fact - alot of the time I don't - only certain people and people don't be asking me for tips - its not going to happen.

I agree- except I wonder if this tipping craziness is all over or just in NY...
I complained to my DH and his response was "I'm a cop and no one tips me..."

Re: How do you really feel about holiday tipping? POLL
DS is not in daycare but if he was, gifts for his teachers would be on the very top of my list. These people take care of your DC daily. I would be very generous because I'd be grateful. If they treat DS a tiny bit better because of a nice gift, that's great too.
I don't know about holiday tipping but I think it's nice to give small tokens of appreciation during the holiday season. I have no problems tipping everyone for future good service.

That's because in a lot of Countries taxes AND gratuity is ALREADY included in the final price you see posted.
