How do you say goodbye to your child? Cancer related

I think most of you know that I'm involved in an organization called St. Baldricks - shaving heads to find a cure for childrens cancer. A few months back, I posted about a girl named Jen and how she's one of the honored kids with St. Baldricks (Northport) and she's also on the committee-which is how we became friends. Here is my original post asking for a miracle for her

Well that was in October, and here we are-almost to June and she hung on this long-but it hasn't been an easy road. She's been in and out of the hospital numerous times since then but she's losing her battle. She's back in the hospital and the doctors have made her as comfortable as they can. They thought they were losing her on Wednesday night. I was supposed to go see her today but I'm not. Her family needs to spend as much time with her as they can. She's only 20 years old.

With that being said- before I was a parent and even now that I am, I could NEVER imgaine having to say good bye to my child. I don't even want to imagine the stress of having my child go through what Jen has gone through, and she's still such a strong woman. My heart is breaking writing this because I know there is absoutely nothing I can do. Jen wasn't well enough to come to St. Baldricks this year, but we know how much she wanted to be there. We had her on Skype with us at our meetings so it was like she was there. I wish I got to see her one last time, I wish she got to meet my daughter. I know I'm rambling but I just can't believe this is it for her. 20 years old, 70 lbs and this girl is one hell of a fighter. Nothing stopped her and I mean NOTHING. She walked around PROUDLY with her bald head. Losing her hair was just a bump in the road for her.

I don't know what I'm asking for, prayers, thoughts, ANYTHING that you can spare. I hope she goes peacefully and knows how much we all love her. She's not only a big part of our St. Baldricks family, but part of me. I spoke to her dad this morning and he told me that she was comfortable but having a little trouble breathing. I guess comfort is something we can ask for at this point?

My heart aches so much for her parents. I'm at a loss of words right now. God Bless her parents because they are so strong willed. I give them so much credit.

I'm thankful every day that my daughter is healthy. I lost my cousin to cancer 10 years ago and since her death, it literally changed my life, changed me as the person that I am.

I know my cousin will welcome her with open arms when the time comes and I really do find comfort in knowing that she won't be in pain anymore.

Jen, i love you and I'm so glad I got the priviledge of meeting you 3 years ago. You are a legend in my eyes and you will never be forgotten.

I'm crying reading this. How special she must be to have touched so many people.

My heart aches for the parents and her loved ones. I can only imagine that losing a child must be the worst thing in the world.

Re: How do you say goodbye to your child? Cancer related

My brother died of Leukemia. Now that I am a parent, I really don't know how my parents when through that. I really can't imagine having to go through it. My grandmother says that my mom has never been the same. He was 3.5 years old and I was 5.

One of my brother's doctor's wrote a book and my family is one of the families featured in it. I read it every few years to remind me of what my parents went through and to remember how precious each day really is.

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I've heard you mention your brother passing but I never knew how and didn't want to ask. Your parents must be incredibly strong Chat Icon

Now that I am a parent I understand the worry of wanting to keep your children safe. To be blindsided by sometihng like cancer that you can't control I dont know how I would handle it. I think that you find an inner strength somehow to stay strong for your cihld and help them fight and if it comes down to them having to say good bye you stay as strong as you can to make their last days as comfortable and happy as possible. I really dont even want to think about it Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

These stories give true meaning to heartache......my heart is literally hurting from even thinking that people have to go through that. And it happens far too much. I really don't know how anyone survives something like that. I don't think I could.

There's a 9th grade girl in my school who I taught last year who shaved her head this year for St. Baldricks. She, her father, and her brother all shaved their heads and raised thousands of dollars together. Chat Icon Such a good cause!

Such a sad thread Chat Icon Chat Icon I was actually just watching My Sister's Keeper and thinking the same thing. I wanted to run up and grap DD out of her crib and just hold her -- I am so afraid of anything ever happening to her. I feel so sorry for any parent who has ever had to deal with such a loss. Dear God...this has me in tears. I couldn't agree more and my heart just breaks for the families of women like Jen and Kristy.
We lost my mother six months ago to cancer-related issues and that kills me every day. I couldn't imagine going through it with DS.

I dont know how a parent does it. I lost my friend Keith to leukemia when he was 19 ( he had fallen ill with it at 17). It puts it in such a different perspective now that I have my own child....what his parents must have been going through.

Hugs for you too though.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
