How do you "use" flash cards
So I have a set that has all the letters, both upper and lower case and on the back, it has an animal with that letter
Did you just go through all the letters first? How many times do you repeat each letter? How many letters did you do at one "sitting"
TIA

Re: How do you "use" flash cards
I sit both boys down, I go through the stack.
I say what the card is and hand the card to one boy. Then give the next card to the next boy. They love it and it keeps them interested.
Then its their turn to hand it to me. So one by one, they hand it back to me, I say what it is...
Then I lay out 6 cards and ask josh to hand me the apple, or whatever. He hands me the card and I jump, scream, yell. He laughs...then we do the next card.
The carseat is the perfect place to go through cards.

Re: How do you "use" flash cards
I just show them to her and read what's on the back. If it's the animal deck I'll make the noise that the animal makes. Usually, she grabs it from me and tries to eat it. Mind you she is 9.5 months old. We get through the whole deck in about 10 minutes. We'll go trough it a couple times, we have 3 sets.

Re: How do you "use" flash cards
we have 1st words ones - that are real pictures and they are touch and feel. We do them for alike 2 minutes a day - sometimes she can pick out the correct card - but most days she prefers to just touch and then eat them Honestly I think she just likes the pictures - although I will say that when I put the box away she climbs up on a toy in her playroom to reach the shelf I put them on and she takes them back down - to again - yup you guessed it - just munch on them.

Re: How do you "use" flash cards
Are cards better than books? I have simple books with one picture on a page so its not over stimulating. Are cards supposed to be better?

I love our books - and she loves for me to read to her - but I like the cards I have - they are just one photo and they have a touch and feel related to the card so she seems more interested than when I read a book to her. I haven't seen a book with only one word a page - but the way she loves to grab the books I think the cards would work better in our case. I like that you can put the cards on the floor and ask her to pick up a certain one that you can't really do with the book.

Re: How do you "use" flash cards
here's how I do it. We sit on the floor facing each other
(1) I hold it up and read him the card "A is for Apple" or if it is just a picture card I tell him what the picture is of
(2) I hand him the card...he either flips it around, eats it, hold it up in the air, sometimes he looks at it
(3) after about 20 seconds I say, "can I have that please?"
(4) he hands it to me, I say "thank you, I'm going to put that here" and I put them in a pile
(5) Repeat
It's strange because he has more patience for flash cards than he does books. I still do books too but I really just wind up making up a story because he just likes to turn the pages.

Re: How do you "use" flash cards
We still use cards and books.
I kind of let them take the lead to be honest.
With Noah - he will want to hold the cards and ask me questions.
NoNo: What letter is this? Me: M... like MANGO NoNo: Very good Mommy! Can you think of another work for M? Me: Cat? NoNo: NO! Me; What noise does M make? I forget? Is it DDDDD? NoNo: No (looks at picture). It is MMMMM like Monkey. Me: OHH! Monkey is a good one... do you know any other Mmm words?
He also likes games - like Memory. We will lay all the cards face down and find matching upper and lower case letters.
Robbie on the other hand is a show off and wants me to quiz him and ask him the hardest questions I can think of. He is now 7 so we don't do letter cards anymore - but we do have vocabulary and spelling and math cards.
Whatever makes it fun for them seems to last the longest and be the most productive.
I make my own flashcards.
