It depends what you are writing, but it would probably work better if it was more structured, and you have somewhat of an outline of where you are going & what your point is.
I don't really see the need for a tape recorder--I think that is used more for interviews, and for reporting of situations where you want to recrod your thoughts as they happen, but can't write them down.
Are you writing just to write or to be published?

i would start off just for the sake of writing and then give the publishing idea a shot... just for the heck of it. the worst they can say is no... and i'm already unpublished lol

Okay--fiction or non-fiction? It is hard to sell a book that wasn't written with a market in mind. Article

Re: how do you write a book??
I am working on one
I did an outline first
and now I am writing it chapter by chapter
I read that the first few chapters need to be your best to get the attention of an agent or publisher
so I am going to really fine tune those and then work on the rest
I also bought a recorder for when I got ideas while driving- that happens to me alot
I need to work on it this week- it's not easy to find the time

Re: how do you write a book??
I am working on a nonfiction, I have my chapters outlined, and have been interviewing people, arrange my notes, and am preparing the sample chapter to send for the book proposal....

Re: how do you write a book??
Charles Bukowski says this: If it doesn't come bursting out of you in spite of everything, don't do it. unless it comes unasked out of your heart and your mind and your mouth and your gut, don't do it. if you have to sit for hours staring at your computer screen or hunched over your typewriter searching for words, don't do it. if you're doing it for money or fame, don't do it. if you're doing it because you want women in your bed, don't do it. if you have to sit there and rewrite it again and again, don't do it. if it's hard work just thinking about doing it, don't do it. if you're trying to write like somebody else, forget about it.
if you have to wait for it to roar out of you, then wait patiently. if it never does roar out of you, do something else.
if you first have to read it to your wife or your girlfriend or your boyfriend or your parents or to anybody at all, you're not ready.
don't be like so many writers, don't be like so many thousands of people who call themselves writers, don't be dull and boring and pretentious, don't be consumed with self-love. the libraries of the world have yawned themselves to sleep over your kind. don't add to that. don't do it. unless it comes out of your soul like a rocket, unless being still would drive you to madness or suicide or murder, don't do it. unless the sun inside you is burning your gut, don't do it.
when it is truly time, and if you have been chosen, it will do it by itself and it will keep on doing it until you die or it dies in you.
there is no other way.
and there never was.

Re: how do you write a book??
There are a lot of resources out there for this sort of thing, but "book" is really broad. There are different standards, requirements & ways to approach it, depending on what type you are writing.
