How does your school handle indoor recess?
Do the kids go back to their classroom? Do the kids bring in electronics (3DS, iPod, etc)? We got an email about "indoor recess rules" today and I'm curious about how other schools handle it. Thanks

Re: How does your school handle indoor recess?
Our middle school doesn’t HAVE a recess (that boggles my mind). I don’t know if that changes after 6th grade.. but right now they have lunch in the cafeteria.. and that’s it until their next class.
Our elementary has recess before lunch – or at least my kids always seem to have it that way. If they will not be going out, the teacher leaves the classroom and a monitor comes in. They are allowed to chat, visit, play board games, read, etc.. When it’s time to eat they get herded down to the cafeteria for lunch.

In my son's school we received a note at the beginning of the year that no electronic toys were permitted in school.

How does your school handle indoor recess?
In K and 1st the kids go the the mini gym and play in there sometimes. Other times and with the older kids, they stay in the classroom and play board games, talk, read, color, play. Sometimes they combine classes. It's like free time for them. There are no electronics allowed in the classrooms.

Our indoor recess is tv time - they show an educational tv show (Zula Patrol, WordGirl, etc).

They go to the gym or the auditorium to watch a movie. Some days a small group have the opportunity to go to the library or play chess.

They go to the auditorium to watch a movie. Some kids get passes to "clubs". There is gym, art, game, library, etc. I think teahers rotate thru the class who gets clubs when.

They go back to the classroom. Never had a note about electronics but DD never spoke about kids bringing them in either.

Re: How does your school handle indoor recess?
No electronic devices are permitted during school hours. For indoor recess they have had it back in their classrooms or in the gym or all purpose room.
Sometimes they do have the Wii set up for them or other things like dance party or something to get them moving, but it is usually board games and stuff like that.
Our school stopped recess at 7th grade when they moved to the JH.

Re: How does your school handle indoor recess?
DS is in kindergarten and when they have indoor recess, they play in the classroom. DS started an activity all the kids in the class now do... they make money! LOL They take scrap paper, color it green, write numbers on it and at the end of recess, they count up their "dollars" and see who has the most.

Indoor recess is back in their classrooms, where they can read, play board games, or watch a movie on the Smart Board the teacher will put on.

Re: How does your school handle indoor recess?
Thank you for all the replies. My kids go to a private school - we got a letter home saying that during indoor recess the kids need to stay at their desks, are not to move about the classroom and that they may bring in a DS but not an ipod. I'm concerned over 2 things mainly - first and foremost i really believe that kids NEED TO MOVE. They need recess to burn off energy and have down time. I wish there were some sort of group activity that could be done - seated yoga even. And second - I really try to limit electronics. As it is they are on the bus for close to 2 hours a day so i do let them bring a ds and/or ipod for the bus ride - I really dont want more screen time during the day. Not to mention that "Christian's ds games are better than mine" and so on. I will say that the school is VERY open to parent dialogue and suggestions. In fact I'm hosting an evening with the superintendent at my home next month. I'll bring up these concerns and see if we can find a solution. Thanks again!

I think it's a good idea to allow the kids to go outside and get some sun instead of cooping them up in a building all day. Obviously there is no 'playground' but I remember we were able to go out and chat by the building, run around if we chose - play a quick game of handball or whatever.. I mean on gorgeous Spring Days they will be locked up from 7:30 to 2:45 with no peek at the sun UNLESS they have gym?
Is there a reason that you think they should not have recess?

I guess they use gym class as a "recess" and most classrooms have windows so it is not like they are totally inside not seeing the sun. My middle school is only 6 hours which is still a lot without a break but I think it is good training for life when you only get a lunch break at work.

Gym is only 2 or 3 days a week (depending on the week) for our school.. but yeah - weather permitting they will go outside (They do indoor stuff like swimming and basketball) during the winter months... but that means that they NEVER go outside during winter months.. even when it's moderate temps and sunny skies.
But you are right - it isn't 'prison' and they do get to peek at the day outside the window. I guess it just doesn't seem like the same thing to me and I really wish they had the option of getting 20-30 minutes to be outside! I guess it is what it is though!!

This is ideal in my opinion.. some kids can choose to stay in and read, do work, talk or what not.. but at least they have the OPTION of getting outside and getting their heart rates up a little!

This could be one of the problems of the youth today not getting enough exercise too. If they do not stay after for sports, they might go home and just veg out for the rest of the day, doing homework, watching TV, playing video games. It is not like when we were kids and as soon as our homework was finished, we were out playing with our friends.
