how early do I have to leave on Thanksgiving morning... (traffic question)
We're going to my brother and SIL's house in MD for Thanksgiving this year and, due to our work schedules, we have to leave Thanksgiving morning.
We are in the Baldwin / RVC area.
If we leave at 6am, is that too late? Will we hit a ton of traffic at that time getting off Long Island?
I KNOW traffic will be horrid that day, but I'm primarily concerned with getting off LI. Do I need to leave earlier than 6am?
Silly question, I know, but I've (literally) never spent Thanksgiving anywhere other than West Hempstead in my ENTIRE life.

traffic is going to be horrible no matter what time you leave... sux i know...
you might have a decent shot if you leave earlier than 6am...

traffics usually nothing on turkey day itself..
same with xmas eve and xmas...
its the days before and after that are the drama days
every year we take a 2 hour ride to my inlaws and noones ever on the road
we commute from south jersey to LI
and if we dont see any on parkways, turnpike i dont think you should hit too much

Yeah, for us, leaving the night before isn't an option. By the time we get home from work, traffic will be horrendous... and we'll be waaay too tired to drive 5+ hours. We're coming back on Saturday which will hopefully not be too bad...

We're traveling to Boston that day. Dinner is at 3 and we plan on leaving by 9... Probably cutting it close, but with kids, getting out earlier isn't goign to happen  Plus I am not a morning person.
We've done it before, drive to Boston on Thanksgiving, and were relatively surprised that we didn't hit a ton of traffic.

last year we sat in horrible traffic when we left the night before, but we want to be able to spend as much time w/ our families the day of since we have to go back home after dinner.

i think you will be fine - it's getting out of the city that's the hardest part, and if you leave at 6am you should be in SI by 7pm, 7:30 the latest. have a good trip!

I agree. The 'day of' a holiday is usually not too bad, unless it's during the summer. I find that travel done on the days before and after a holiday are usually worse.
