How far in advance did you book your Disney vacation?

As of now we are planning Disney during October next year...we want to go during Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween. How far in advance can you/did you book? I would like to get good flight prices. Do they generally have any deal during different times?

Did you book your hotel at that time as well or earlier???

ETA: Which airlines did you find the best prices?

Re: How far in advance did you book your Disney vacation?

Well they always release the next years packages and prices in August. So we book around that time for the next calendar. We do that b/c I often find in the past we get the best airfare when we book shortly after dates are released. When I have held off in the past and tracked prices I ended up spending more than if I booked immediately. Airlines like Jet blue release their cheapest rates often 1st - BUT if it does go down they will give you a credit towards a future flight. What the airlines sites - this year they released airfare MUCH earlier than they had in the past. I think they released dates for Sept and Oct and January when they usually don't do so until 6 months before.

The real advantage of booking early is that you get 1st choice of room categories - if it is busy or there are a lot of discounts out there sometimes the cheapest room categories sell out at the hotel you want. I think there is free dining offer now for next year that goes until Sept or Oct of 2011- but I haven't looked recently so not sure - but there is a date you have to book by.

The only other advantage of booking early is that IF you don't book a package and you need park tickets - they raise those prices in early August - so prices have already gone up - but you want to keep an eye on sites like Mousesavers and disboards - b.c it there is a price increase again before August you want to jump on those tickets and people will post on there a day or two - sometimes a week before it happens.

Etd to add:
Airfare for us this year Jet blue was cheaper than Delta or Southwest. BUT other times Southwest or delta was a better deal. So it really depends. Just remember to factor in baggage costs. Jet blue allows for 1 bag per ticketed passenger, Delta you have to pay PER bag - NO free bags, Southwest you get 2 free bags. For us this year (we flew in May) if we paid for 1 bag PP with jet blue - which means we brought 8 bags for the 4 of us - it was still cheaper than Southwest - and we only paid for 1 extra bag this trip).

I find often I do the best on prices by checking out Kyack.com and then booking directly through the airlines rather than sites like expedia etc.

Just make sure you book before the 180 days out if you are doing meals! That is when you can start making reservations at the Sit-down restaurants! They book up REAL fast!

ITA this!! If you want to make your Advance dining reservations 180 days out ( you can actually do 180 from the 1st day of your trip then can book dining for up to the 1st 10 days of your trip - which is a big +). Many restaurants don't take walk ins at all - and popular restaurants can often fill at the 180 day marks.

Keep in mind if you are hoping for a code and plan to go a specific week you can book now and then wait for a code to come out - when one is released you can call and they will apply the discount to your package - that is what we always do.

If you're doing a package, the prices were just released for 2011. October is not "peak" time (unless it's around Columbus Day) as there are no school vacations. However, the restaurants do fill up rather quickly. If your heart is set on eating at a certain restaurant on a certain day/time, you're best off making the dining reservations 180 days out. It's not like you won't be able to eat, you just may not get into your preferred restaurant at your preferred time.

I've booked my trips as far out as 5 months and as close as 3 weeks.

Which restaurants do you recommend?

We were also thinking of getting a Disney Dining Package. They have a bunch of different options. Anything inparticular you recommend?

I usually do the basic Dining Plan. We find that it's plenty of food. We also add the wine and dine option but that's just us.

The basic dining plan allows one quick service, one table service and one snack per person per day. It's A LOT of food and very worth the $$$.

All of the restaurants are great but some favorites are:

Cinderella's Royal Table at the castle (try to book during fireworks time)

California Grill at the Contemporary (again try to book at fireworks). California Grill may not appeal to kids.

Le Celiar Steakhouse in Canada at Epcot - AMAZING

Sci Fi Diner at Hollywood Studios.

There are so many good restaurants that it can be hard to pick...

You might want to check out http://allears.net/menu/menus.htm

I love that site b.c it lists ALL the sit down, counter service and carts in WDW. This way you can see where you want to eat and get an idea of the menus and IF it is worth doing on the dining plan. We have done the dining plan our last 3 out of 4 trips b.c we always come out ahead.

If you are doing dining plan you will come out better with character meals at dinner more so than at lunch or breakfast.

For us -these have worked b/c they have things for the kids to keep them occupied:

Ohana (Poly) - family style (under 3 are free) - They have coconut races, teach the children how to hula, sing and have the kids dance around the restaurant, limbo etc. They do that at dinner - breakfast is a character meal.

Chef Mickey's - character meal at the Contempoary - buffet with Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy and Pluto. (they do breakfast and dinner - during certain times of the year they add a lunch but that is rare). Under 3 are free

Crystal Palace - in MK - buffet with Pooh and friends - Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Liberty Tree tavern - serves a family style dinner at the MK. Great for a quick meal in the MK if you are going there in the evening.

Epcot has a ton of restaurants:

Coral Reef in living with the seas - Huge fish tanks so you can watch them during dinner - sometimes there are divers in the tank to watch as well. You will have to pay if you have under 3 if you order them a meal

Biergarten - we didn't love it in the past but tried it this trip and it was a big hit with the girls and all the kids around us seemed to love it. It is like a going to a beerfest - they have a stage and a band that plays music - and a large dance floor - all the children were up and dancing around. The girls were asking to go back. (under 3 are free)

San Angel Inn - in the Mexican pavillion - looks like a large mexican market - the boat ride floats by the restaurant so you can watch them go by while you eat. You will have to pay if you have under 3 and order a meal.

I have heard mixed things - we haven't tried it - but Living with the land has a character meal at the Garden Grill - some love it - others say stay away.

Japan - has a habachi restaurant - we didn't try it b.c I was worried about eating at a table with the girl with 2 active kids under 3. But that is a fun place.

Norway has a great princess character meal - but I don't think that would be your thing with boys.

We have had fun at Marrakesh - we didn't eat there this past trip - but took DD#1 on her 1st trip. They have live music and a belly dancer. They encourage the children (and sometimes adults) to get up and dance. If you aren't adventurous they do have things like coucous and shish kabobs.

There is a pub type restaurant in England and you can dine inside or outside.

Canada has a steak restaurant - we have not had success there but many like it.

There is a new wood burning pizza place that will be opening soon in Italy that looks interesting.

At HS -

There is a character breakfast and lunch at Hollywood and Vine with the little einsteins.

We like Sci fi drive in - DD#1 LOVED it (DD#2 slept thru the meal). You sit in Cars (they have 2-3 booths in the cars (they have high chairs that sit next to the car if you need one) - You sit in the car and it is like going to a drive in - with a huge movie screen. Food is eh - but the burgers and shakes are good. Not the best value for the dining plan though - but a LOT of fun if you want to do it.

There is 50s prime time - which you are served by "auntie or a cousin" and it is an interactive type place - they tell you - no elbows on the table etc - we haven't eaten there but it is pretty popular. Again not a great deal if you are on the dining plan - but a fun place if you don't mind that type of interaction.

I don't think they are on the dining plan anymore (not sure they ever were) but there are 2 rainforest Cafe's (one in AK and one in downtown disney). There is also a new place that sounds like fun in downtown disney called TRex cafe - that is like a rainforest cafe BUT it is with dinosaurs. It is loud though from what I read if you have a child that scares easily. DD#1 loved the rainforest restaurant when we ate at the AK location.

Then there are many places that children are welcome but are more adult dining experiences- if you are looking for a place like that - I can make a list of those places if you are interested.

Re: How far in advance did you book your Disney vacation?

If someone hasn't already mentioned it.. Disney has already released promotional packages through the end of September 2011. This is a bit unprecedented, and since one of these promotions is the highly popular "Free Dining", resorts may book far faster than in recent years, especially for the month of September.

Good reason to book extra early if considering that time of year!

Oh, and to expand upon Lilykat's excellent post - TRex and Rainforest Cafe (both locations) do not participate in any of the Disney dining plans.

just to add to this: DD loved the sci fi drive in. she sat the whole meal (something she never does) and I love the food there. The Reuben is the best I've ever had.

Germany and Canada were dissapointing. Germany had nothing for DD to eat, she had a few bites of soup, but that was it. And I wasn't totally blown away by the food in Canada.

But we loved Chef Mickeys and the Crystal Palace. Both had good selections for DD. She ate cereal at CM's and had meatballs (her favourite) at CP.

But we were always able to order her something when the kids menu was available. She ate pizza, macaroni or nuggets at every meal, but she ate so that made me happy.

SaraH is definitely right - we have never had a good meal at Canada's restaurant even though it is really popular.

I'm surprised they may have changed the menu at Germany since we were there last - I didn't love it in the past but we had a good meal there this time. They had plain breaded chicken, macaroni and cheese, potato pasta (spetzle), and a few other things like rotisseri meats etc that the girls like. But if you want chicken fingers and pizza I don't remember that they have that. You are better somewhere else.

f you're comparing it to the summer crowds, then yes. However, over recent years September has become a very popular month to visit Disney World because....

1. September offers the lowest room rates of the year

2. Disney has traditionally offered some kind of promotion (most notably "Free Dining") during this time of year to lure more guests

In addition to the above, you can expect increased crowds at the end of September and early October due to the Food & Wine Festival. This event takes place at Epcot, and begins around October 1st or 2nd. The festival not only attracts many visitors from outside the area, but a huge contingent of locals, who come in primarily on the weekends.

Finally, if all of that is not enough to deter you from a late September stay, Disney held its inaugural Wine & Dine Marathon this year. The Disney marathon weekends are extremely popular, and most (if not all) resorts are fully booked for these events. In 2011, the marathon (it's actually a half marathon) will take place from Sep 30 through Oct 2, and you can pretty much be assured it will draw the same large crowds it did a couple weeks ago.

I will continue to visit Disney during this time as my daughter loves to compete in the kids events available during the marathon weekend. But there will much more thought given to a clients needs before I can recommend this as a "premEAR" time to visit Walt Disney World.

Hope That Helps!
