How long after giving birth are you allowed to stay at the hospital?
Just curious? Is it different based on your insurance company or based on vaginal vs. c-section?

I think it is based on delivery- at Good Sam it's 1 night for vaginal and 2-3 for c-section (I think....) assuming no problems

Re: How long after giving birth are you allowed to stay at the hospital?
Usually it's determined by how you give birth. But your insurance also plays a role. I had a c-section on Thurs and I went home on Sun morning, but my OB said he would call the ins company if I wanted to stay another day. I decided not to.

I stayed in the hospital almost exactly 48 hours after giving birth (vaginal).

Re: How long after giving birth are you allowed to stay at the hospital?
Direct from the Department of Labor:
How does the Newborns' and Mothers' Health Protection Act of 1996 affect my health care benefits?
The Newborns' Act affects the amount of time you and your newborn child are covered for a hospital stay following childbirth. Group health plans, insurance companies and health maintenance organizations (HMOs) that are subject to the Newborns' Act may not restrict benefits for a hospital stay in connection with childbirth to less than 48 hours following a vaginal delivery or 96 hours following a delivery by cesarean section. However, the attending provider may decide, after consulting with you, to discharge you or your newborn child earlier. In any case, the attending provider cannot receive incentives or disincentives to discharge you or your child earlier than 48 hours (or 96 hours).

Re: How long after giving birth are you allowed to stay at the hospital?
2 days for vaginal at St. Charles. But it depends on when you have your child.
I labored all day and had a baby at 11:44 at night. Since I had DS before 12 am, that was considered 1 day. So I had to stay the next whole day, then went home the next day at 10 am.
If you have your baby at 12:01 am, then you stay that whole day, then the next whole day, then go home the day after that. Does that make sense?
